Bien Hoa Airport is the largest remaining dioxin hotspot in Vietnam.

Vietnam and the U.S. have kickstarted the process of cleaning up the dioxin around Bien Hoa Airport, a heavily contaminated zone just outside Ho Chi Minh City.

The process formally began on Tuesday with the signing of a Memorandum of Intent between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Military Science Department under Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense.

When 247 million cubic feet of snow and ice collapsed off a glacier in the dry, mountainous region of western Tibet in 2016, the roiling mass took with it nine human lives and hundreds of animals, spreading more than five miles in three minutes at speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour. The event surprised scientists, who had seen a collapse that big and that fast only once before.

straitstimes_The 11 countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) are set to sign their pact without an original partner, the United States, in March in Chile. The deal was reached on Tuesday (Jan 23) after two days of talks in Tokyo.

Here’s a look at what the latest deal, renamed the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) after Washington’s withdrawal, is about.

1. WHAT IS CPTPP?

In November 2017, ministers of the remaining 11 TPP countries agreed on the way forward to implement the TPP agreement without the US, and also renamed it as the CPTPP.

The CPTPP will incorporate the original TPP agreement, with suspension of a limited number of provisions, while still seeking to maintain the high standard of the agreement.

Tariffs schedules are kept as negotiated with custom duties on 95 per cent of trade in goods to be removed in the long run.

Commitments to liberalise in key areas such as textiles, technical barriers to trade and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, competition, state-owned enterprises and small- and medium-sized enterprises, labour, and dispute settlement, are still intact. Người dân xã Đồng Tâm lại một lần nữa gửi thư ngỏ cầu cứu đến Trung ương Đảng, Chính phủ và Quốc hội. Trong thư ngỏ mới nhất đề ngày 20/01/2018 vừa qua, họ khẩn cầu: “Mười nghìn người dân xã Đồng Tâm tha thiết thỉnh cầu đến các Ông bà Đảng và Nhà nước cử những người có tâm huyết, có chuẩn mực đạo đức, biết thương dân về xã chúng tôi để nghe tâm tư nguyện vọng, nghe tiếng kêu cứu, nức nở, ai oán, u sầu… của người dân! Đừng để người dân thấp cổ bé họng chúng tôi kêu không thấu tới trời thì oan ức quá!”. Trong thư ngỏ này, người dân xã Đồng Tâm thể hiện mong muốn là vụ việc và nỗi oan ức, bất công của họ được giải quyết sao cho thấu tình, trọn nghĩa! Một động thái chính trị rất khôn ngoan, mở đầu bức Thư ngỏ này, thêm một lần họ tái khẳng định: “Nhân dân xã Đồng Tâm chúng tôi xin khẳng định rằng chúng tôi không chống lại Đảng, không lật đổ chính quyền! Chúng tôi chỉ căm thù và chống lại bọn tham nhũng vì chúng là giặc nội xâm; bọn chúng đã lợi dụng quyền lực để cướp đất của người dân hun đúc lợi ích khủng để hình thành những nhóm lợi ích!”.

Ngày 23/1, Tòa án nhân dân tỉnh An Giang xét xử sơ thẩm và tuyên phạt 4 bị cáo cùng về tội “Tuyên truyền chống Nhà nước Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam” theo khoản 2 Điều 88 Bộ luật Hình sự đã được sửa đổi, bổ sung năm 2009.

Dung has played a leading role in researching and finding a method to make silver nano, an important material used to health care and protection, which is in high demand in Vietnam.

In an interview with reporters, Dung said the deaths of four infants at Bac Ninh Hospital of Obstetrics and Paediatrics in the northern province of Bac Ninh Province in November 2017 was due to septic shock.

A nano-silver covered air filtration membrane would have helped filter the air and prevent microorganisms from entering treatment rooms.

Some 72 per cent of Vietnamese women have joined the labour force, higher than the average world percentage (42 per cent), and ranking only behind Cambodia (81 per cent).
