Phi công Nguyễn Hữu Cường nói máy bay Su-30 số hiệu 8585 đã có tiếng nổ phát ra trong buồng lái khiến các anh phải nhảy dù ra ngoài. Điều này đã loại bỏ giả thiết máy bay rơi vì phi công nhầm lẫn mặt biển và bầu trời khi nhào lộn phức tạp. Mặt khác nó cũng đã bác bỏ thuyết âm mưu nói rằng máy bay Su-30 rơi là vì bị tên lửa TQ bắn.
