Vietnam’s illegal ivory market continues to thrive, report finds

    • Over two surveys conducted between November 2016 and June 2017, TRAFFIC’s researchers found more than 10,000 ivory items being offered on sale across 852 physical outlets and 17 online platforms, suggesting an ivory market that has continued to thrive over the past few decades.
    • Physical retail stores in Ho Chi Minh City and Buon Ma Thuot had the highest number of ivory items for sale, the surveys found, but two villages, Ban Don and Lak, had a disproportionately high number of items on sale compared to the number of stores. Among the online platforms, social media sites had the highest number of posts offering ivory for sale.

Chinese surveillance technology is being used by Latin American countries for everything from fighting crime to monitoring natural disasters – but critics fear it could be used for darker purposes, too.

Without sufficient checks, the technology could provide authoritarian regimes with “something they have previously only dreamed about: a massive ability to sanction persons who engage in political or social behaviours disapproved of by government”, warns a recent study by the Centre For Strategic and International Studies. Season’s Greetings. 2018 has been an eventful year, in Asia and in the stories shared here in the InAsia blog, where I had the pleasure in May to take over the reins from longtime editor Alma Freeman. We’re all grateful, at year’s end, for the continued engagement of our readers, and for the thoughtful contributions of our bloggers, who brought us their unique perspectives and insights on developments in Asia. Here are a few of the year’s most fascinating essays, some of them favorites of our readers and some favorites of yours truly. Enjoy! Bài báo này mô tả những xu hướng và phát triển hiện nay trong nền giáo dục ở Việt Nam, sự di chuyển của sinh viên và cung cấp một cái nhìn tổng quát về hệ thống giáo dục Việt Nam.

NỀN KINH TẾ TĂNG TRƯỞNG

Việt Nam là một quốc gia bùng nổ chứng kiến những cải cách thị trường rộng lớn từ những năm 1980, khi chính phủ cộng sản chuyển từ nền kinh tế chỉ huy sang nền kinh tế tư bản cởi mở hơn mà không mất đi kiểm soát về chính trị.

Ở Trung Quốc, thành công của chiến lược này đầy ấn tượng: Trong 30 năm qua, Việt Nam, đất nước với 92.7 triệu người ( 2016, số liệu Ngân hàng thế giới), đã chuyển từ một quốc gia nghèo khó, bị chiến tranh tàn phá thành một “con hổ con” công nghiệp mới với một trong những nền kinh tế sôi động nhất thế giới. Từ năm 1990 đến 2016, GDP của Việt Nam tăng trưởng 3.303%, tốc độ tăng trưởng đứng thứ 2 trên toàn thế giới, chỉ sau Trung Quốc.

Tăng trưởng kinh tế liên tục của Việt Nam không được bảo đảm và vẫn sự phụ thuộc vào rất nhiều yếu tố, bao gồm mức đầu tư trực tiếp từ nước ngoài, ổn định chính trị, phát triển cơ sở hạ tầng và hiện đại hóa một hệ thống luật lệ khó thở tràn ngập tham nhũng. Cuộc đối đầu không tiếng súng nhưng vô cùng quyết liệt tại vĩ tuyến 17 đầu thập niên 1960 đã được tạp chí LIFE ghi lại qua những hình ảnh đặc sắc.

Điều ước cho đất nước năm 2019

  1. Xóa ISDS trong các hiệp ước quốc tế.

ISDS là điều khoản cho phép một nhà đầu tư nước ngoài chống lại luật quốc gia chủ nhà (như luật Việt Nam) và kiện chính phủ quốc gia chủ nhà (như chính phủ Việt Nam) qua một hội đồng trọng tài quốc tế xét xử theo quy định của một hiệp nước đã có với Việt Nam (như CPTPP, Hiệp định thương mại EU-VN, và nhiều hiệp ước thương mại song phương đã ký).
