Viet Nam News NEW YORK — Việt Nam is among four countries in Southeast Asia selected to become training sites for UN peacekeeping forces, with the first training course to be held in Việt Nam at the end of this year.

The decision was announced by the UN Department of Field Support (DFS) on June 25 following inspections of training facilities in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The three other countries are Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Representatives of ASEAN welcomed the UN’s decision to hold training courses in Southeast Asia, and congratulated Việt Nam on being the first country to host a course.

Việt Nam’s selection demonstrates the UN’s high regard for Việt Nam’s commitments and contributions to UN peacekeeping activities.

Việt Nam is preparing to send a second-level field hospital to South Sudan.

The country has sent 20 officers to work at the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic and the UN Mission in South Sudan, including a female officer, after nearly four years of training with the UN. — VNS
