Photo essay: Typhoon Damrey wreaks havoc in central localities

HÀ NỘI — Typhoon Damrey has wreaked havoc in the south central coast of Việt Nam, killing 27 people and leaving 22 others missing by Sunday morning after making landfall on Saturday morning in the central province of Khánh Hòa.The deaths occurred in the central provinces of Bình Định and Khánh Hòa, and in the Central Highlands provinces of Lâm Đồng and Đắk Lắk and in a sunken ship, while the missing people were in Bình Định and Phú Yên provinces and in a sunken ship, according to the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

The storm destroyed 626 houses, unroofed and damaged 39,704 houses in the region, mostly in Khánh Hòa, Phú Yên, and Đắk Lắk provinces. As many as 4,425 hectares of rice were flooded and 25,212 hectares of crops were ruined. Up to 228 fishing vessels were sunk while nearly 1,500 fishing farms were damaged in Bình Định, Phú Yên, and Khánh Hòa. — VNS
