Situation of women journalists in Asia-Pacific, 20 years after the Beijing Declaration

asiapacific.unwomen – Bangkok, Thailand – There are more women media professionals than ever in many countries across Asia-Pacific, but they still represent only three out of 10 newsroom staff, often earn less than their male counterparts and are subject to sexual harassment, while struggling to reach decision-making positions.

These are some of the findings in “Inside the News: Challenges and Aspirations of Women Journalists in Asia and the Pacific”, a study launched yesterday by UNESCO, UN Women and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand.

“Inside the News” highlights how issues of gender impact the lives and work of journalists in the region, with case studies drawn from the personal accounts of media professionals in Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu.

(NLĐO) – Cư dân trên đảo Thị Tứ thuộc quần đảo Trường Sa (của Việt Nam) được cho là đã nhìn thấy tàu Trung Quốc thả hóa chất khiến cá chết hàng loạt xung quanh khu vực này.

Họ cáo buộc thủ phạm là tàu Trung Quốc thường xuyên di chuyển trong vòng 5 km quanh đảo Thị Tứ (đang bị Philippines chiếm giữ trái phép). Vu Vinh Phu, chairman of the Hanoi Supermarkets Association, told the seminar that unsafe food has become a national crisis. It can be found at traditional wet markets, on the streets and even at popular supermarkets where customers believe they can acquire safe food.

Last week, Laos’ newly elected president visited Vietnam in a bid to boost ties following leadership transitions in the two communist neighbors.

Bounnhang Vorachith, who clinched the post of Laos’ Communist Party chief back in January before being appointed president on April 20 by the National Assembly, made his official visit to Vietnam, which had also just finished going through its quinquennial Party Congress. The visit, which was his first overseas trip, lasted from April 25 to 27 and saw him meet with several top Vietnamese officials in Hanoi, including General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, President Tran Dai Quang, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and Vietnam’s first ever chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. The beautiful beaches of Chile have long been a draw for tourists, but the dead whales, salmon, sardines and clams washing up on the shores lately have made them a lot less picturesque, and scientists believe El Niño is to blame.

That and other machines were made available at Fablab Danang, part of a global network of open laboratories that let people fabricate products and inventions that might otherwise be impossible for someone working alone. Fablab is also part of a growing movement in Vietnam, which relies on technology and practical training to get young people excited about finding a career. Since the end of 2015, unusually dry conditions and a shortage of rainfall have seriously affected Viet Nam. These conditions which are associated with El Niño, have led to severe drought  in parts of the central, central highlands and southern regions of the country, including the Mekong Delta. Some water levels are at the lowest recorded in 90 years.

Scientists blame the ongoing 2015-2016 El Nino weather phenomenon, one of the most powerful on record, for the current drought.

HANOI: Vietnam is suffering its worst drought in nearly a century with salinisation hitting farmers especially hard in the crucial southern Mekong delta, experts said Monday (Mar 1,  2016).
