How can development cooperation address ocean plastic pollution?

23 January 2018

In the first weeks of 2018 there were (for me) unexpected announcements from both the EU and the UK Government on the urgent global issue of ocean plastic pollution. The EU intends to make all plastic packaging on the European market recyclable by 2030 and in her speech announcing the UK’s 25 Year Environment Plan, Prime Minister Theresa May committed the UK to eliminating all “avoidable plastic waste” by 2042. The Prime Minister also said it would direct UK aid to help developing nations reduce plastic waste, which could indicate a new direction for the UK’s and other countries’ aid programmes.

Các Văn Kiện Cấm Đạo (4 phần)

Các Văn Kiện Cấm Đạo (1)

catechesis.net – Được viết ngày Thứ ba, 16 Tháng 12 2014 15:35

Lm.

Thung Nai – miniature of Ha Long Bay in northwest

Last update 11:11 | 04/02/2018

Thung Nai in Hoa Binh province, attracts tourists with landscapes as beautiful as Ha Long Bay.

Located 110 km from Hanoi, Thung Nai is a large valley surrounded by forests and mountains which are home to a large number of deer. In the afternoon, the deer come to the Da river to drink.

The construction of the Hoa Binh hydro power plant in 1994 created a large lake in the valley. Seen from above, the valley is spectacular.

Thung Nai is most crowded in the spring because that’s the best time to admire its beauty. Visitors can also explore Thac Bo cave and temple, Thac Bo market, and villages of the Muong ethnic minority. Tiếp tục đọc “Thung Nai – miniature of Ha Long Bay in northwest”

Nam was chosen with other four ethnic women in the northern province of Thanh Hoa to attend a six-month training course at Barefoot College in India in 2015 under a project that focuses on creating opportunities for poor women to learn about solar energy.

Upon hearing the news, Nam said, she felt joyful, but nervous. “I was scared. I didn’t know anything about electricity. Never before had I seen a bulb or electricity wire,” she said. Tiếp tục đọc “Muong woman brings light to her village”

Vietnam fears effects of US tax bill on foreign investment

Last update 10:38 | 04/02/2018

Tax reform passed by the US Congress at the end of last year may affect Vietnam’s economy as US investors are likely to send their investment back home, where the corporate income tax (CIT) rate has been slashed, Vietnamese economic experts have warned.

Vietnam fears effects of US tax bill on foreign investment, vietnam economy, business news, vn news, vietnamnet bridge, english news, Vietnam news, news Vietnam, vietnamnet news, vn news, Vietnam net news, Vietnam latest news, Vietnam breaking news

The sweeping tax reforms, signed into law by President Donald Trump on December 22, include reductions in the CIT rate from 35 per cent to 21 per cent and a minimum of 10.5 per cent rate on any foreign profits US companies send home.

The tax overhaul should encourage corporations to relocate or build new operations in the US instead of overseas, where the CIT rate is often lower.

The US Government also hopes that US companies will repatriate their foreign cash piles given the attractive 10.5 per cent tax rate. Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam fears effects of US tax bill on foreign investment”

VN seeks to accelerate agricultural restructuring

Last update 10:28 | 04/02/2018

Accelerating agricultural restructuring towards large-scale and high-tech production became critical for the sector involving 70 per cent of the country’s population but contributing just below 20 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

There is no busier time than Tết for Thủy Trầm Village in northern Phú Thọ Province as the year comes to an end. It is a time of high demand for the village’s famous produce, golden carp.

On the 23rd day of the last month of the year, Vietnamese families hold a send-off ceremony for the ông Công ông Táo, the genies found in every Vietnamese home. Special offerings are made at New Year. Among other things, golden carp are indispensable.

After prayers are finished, the carp are released into a large body of water, usually lakes, but preferably streams or rivers. Tiếp tục đọc “Business blooms at carp village”

Many locals have been exploiting natural and cultural advantages to develop their business.

With agility and intelligence, 33-year-old Sung A Ho, a resident of Ngai Cho Village, was one of the first to offer a homestay service in the commune.

The first impression that people have of Ho is that of a friendly and frank man. Born into a poor family with eight children, he did not have the resources to go to school. He cannot read or write, but that has not stopped him from earning a stable living.

“My family used to be very poor,” he said. “We had to work on terraced rice and maize fields throughout the year. Sometimes when we did not have a good harvest, we had to eat cassava instead of rice or maize.” Tiếp tục đọc “Mong man turns home into business”
