Thousands of people of different generations have volunteered to join the country’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19, and their acts of kindness have contributed to helping many overcome the most difficult times in their lives.

They include not only medical workers and soldiers but also normal people willing to work for the good of others.

LTS: Rừng bị tàn sát mênh mông. Cán bộ tha hóa đi tù vì bảo kê cho lâm tặc. Nhiều nghìn héc-ta (ha) rừng tự nhiên biến mất trong xót xa. Tất cả, dường như vẫn là chưa đủ với lòng tham và sự nhẫn tâm của không ít kẻ. 

Gần đây, lại rộ lên phong trào “bứng” cây cổ thụ về trưng diện cho nhà cửa, công trình, đặc biệt là các biệt thự, resort, khách sạn để… thể hiện đẳng cấp.

Những “rừng” cây khổng lồ, có khi đường kính đến một, hai, ba mét, được cắt rễ, đánh bầu, cưa ngọn, cẩu đi, ghép mầm hoa… 

Các “lão mộc tinh” được tập kết trong các vựa buôn cây khắp từ Bắc chí Nam, đặc biệt là ở các khu vực trọng điểm như dọc đường Láng Hòa Lạc (huyện Hoài Đức), xã Yên Bài (Ba Vì – Hà Nội), miền núi các tỉnh Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, Quảng Nam, Bình Định, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Đắk Lắk, Bình Dương và TP HCM…

Growing up, I learned to value each grain of rice. Rice was a main food item my Vietnamese refugee family turned to for both nutrition and comfort. After my parents’ long day of laboring in garment factories or in the hot sun of construction sites, the ritual of a warm, fresh bowl of rice was something my family and I enjoyed together. My sister and I would set our coffee table with newspaper, a tablecloth proxy. We each got a warm bowl of rice with a set of wooden chopsticks. Our rice would always be paired with a vegetable stir fry (cải xào), braised meat (thịt kho), or a hearty soup like stuffed bittermelon (canh khổ qua). And we ate as a family while watching the daily evening lineup of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
