Young entrepreneurs have come up with a creative way to have visitors to Hoi An City take part of its famous nipa palm forest home as souvenirs, Hoai Nam reports

Trương Tấn Thọ, 39, earns a living making traditional paper.

Apart from the famous (poonah) paper, his firm in Hoi An City, called Giấy Việt (Vietnamese paper), also makes paper from the pulp of bamboo and mulberry trees.

A few years ago, Thọ hit up on the idea of using the stems of the nipa palm (called water coconut in Viet Nam), found in profusion in the area, to make paper and paper products, using the know-how he had acquired in making traditional paper with local materials. Củ Chi farms its way to post-war charms

Already famous for its incredible network of underground tunnels, Củ Chi is using its rustic ambience to attract more visitors keen to get away from urban bustle, Sơn Hà finds.

Arguably, no visitor to HCM City, or Việt Nam, even, will miss a trip to the Guerilla Warfare Tunnels.

They are a dark reminder of dark days, and a fantastic reminder of incredible bravery, ingenuity and indomitable spirit.

The underground network of tunnels that will never cease to amaze, with its sheer length and facilities like trenches, docks, dining spaces, bedrooms and warehouses, has come out of hiding to become a living museum of the Resistance.

The earliest tunnel appeared in 1948 in two communes of Tân Phú Trung and Phước Vĩnh An. At first, there were just short and simple complexes for hiding documents, weapons and some guerillas.

Later, more tunnels were dug and wound their way to neighbouring communes. Between 1961 and 1965, six communes in the north of Củ Chi had completed the “backbone” tunnel. Branch tunnels connected with the backbone to form a network that could be expanded, if needed. They were needed. The Củ Chi Tunnels expanded rapidly, especially in the beginning of 1966, as the fight against American intensified.

By 1967, the tunnel system had a total length of 250 kilometres, a man-made wonder.

The “iron land” of guerilla forces has now transformed itself, from an area most devastated by war in the southern region into a popular tourist destination and now, a “new rural area”.

The world’s top underground tourist attraction welcomed around 1.5 million visitors last year, 650,000 of them foreigners, says Colonel Trần Văn Tâm, director of Historic Relics & Củ Chi Tunnel Complex. Tiếp tục đọc “Củ Chi farms its way to post-war charms”

For old folks left to die at Myanmar’s roadsides and cemeteries, these homes are their last hope

Cast aside “like rubbish” and turned away even by nursing homes, these elderly outcasts are given dignity at the end of life by volunteer groups outraged by their plight.

The elderly woman had just been involved in a road accident. But instead of getting help, the driver had abandoned the woman next to a rubbish dump by the road to fend for herself.

Daw Khin Ma Ma said her stomach churned at the sight of the battered old woman who was eventually conveyed to her nursing home. “Her rib bones were broken, some of which had pierced her lungs. We could see a hole in her back that had been gnawed on by the rats,” she said. Tiếp tục đọc “For old folks left to die at Myanmar’s roadsides and cemeteries, these homes are their last hope”

North Korea has defied Donald Trump’s demands for it to abandon its nuclear and missile programmes, launching a missile from an eastern port city on Sunday morning.

However, the test appeared to fail. “The missile blew up almost immediately,” the United States Pacific Command said in a statement. “The type of missile is still being assessed.” Reuters reported one US official as saying it was confident the failed projectile was not an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). VCCI, in its 2016 PCI report, pointed out that there are still many ‘big stones’ that block enterprises’ way, including lack of transparency, difficulties to access land, unfair environment and under-the-table fees.

State management agencies have established ‘one-stop-shop’ units to ease administrative procedures that people and businesses have to follow. However, the units still cannot help. Businesses still have to spend three months on procedures which can be completed in one month. Tiếp tục đọc “Under-the-table fees block Vietnam enterprises’ way”

Ha Noi’s Department of Civil Judgment Enforcement was concentrating on ten major economic corruption cases in which defendants must return over VND269 billion (US$12 million).

“The assets that need to be recovered are huge, but the authorities have not been able to confirm if the defendants have sufficient funds to pay or not,” he said. Tiếp tục đọc “Asset recovery remains low”

According to Izumi Devalier from HSBC (Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking  Corporation), 70 percent of kieu hoi are poured into business.

According to the State Bank, one-fifth of kieu hoi in 2015, or $2.5 billion, flowed into the real estate market.

According to Nguyen Hoang Minh, deputy director of the State Bank’s HCMC Branch, only $5 billion of kieu hoi had been remitted to the city by the end of 2016.

In general, the volume of kieu hoi to HCMC accounts for more than 50 percent of total kieu hoi to Vietnam. This means that the total kieu hoi volume to Vietnam in 2016 was no more than $10 billion. The figure was much lower than the $12.2 billion in 2015.

Kieu hoi (overseas remittances) to Vietnam unexpectedly decreased in 2016, raising concerns among real estate developers as kieu hoi are an important source of capital for the property market.

For many years, kieu hoi has been considered an important capital source like FDI (foreign direct investment) and ODA (official development assistance).

According to the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM), in 1999-2015, Vietnam received $120 billion worth of kieu hoi and was among the biggest kieu hoi receivers in the world. Tiếp tục đọc “Overseas remittances fall, worrying real estate developers”
