HTN • 14/08/2014

VeDIAL: Tham luận của Vũ Thị Phương Anh (Đại học Kinh Tế Tài Chính thành phố Hồ Chí Minh) tại hội thảo Cải cách giáo dục đại học VED 2014.  Slides của bài tham luận có thể tải về tại Presentation 6: Autonomy and the New Law of Higher Education.

Where The Wind Blew

springfilms.

WHERE THE WIND BLEW tells the story of how the Cold War super powers, in their race to develop more and more deadly bombs, spent forty years developing weapons capable of wiping out entire nations, while sacrificing their own vulnerable populations in the name of national security.

Using archive and testimony from both those affected and those participating in these escalating events, Where the Wind Blew shows not only how ordinary people were allowed to suffer in ignorance, but also how, with personal fortitude and courage they defied their governments. They helped change the course of history by joining forces, first nationally, then across the world to finally triumph against the testing of nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan became, in 1989, the first nation to close its test site, leading the way to an international test ban treaty. Tiếp tục đọc “Where The Wind Blew” →

Review of Configuration of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridors

Abstract: This review recommends possible extension and/or realignment of economic corridors to enhance their effectiveness and efficiency in advancing economic integration in the Greater Mekong Subregion. The economic corridor approach was adopted by the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries in 1998 to help accelerate subregional development. The development of economic corridors links production, trade, and infrastructure within a specific geographic area. The review of these corridors was conducted to take into account the opening up of Myanmar and ensure that there is a close match between corridor routes and trade flows; GMS capitals and major urban centers are connected to each other; and the corridors are linked with maritime gateways. The review came up with recommendations for possible extension and/or realignment of the corridors, and adoption of a classification system for corridor development. The GMS Ministers endorsed the recommendations of the study at the 21st GMS Ministerial Conference in Thailand in 2016.

The Challenge of Agricultural Pollution : Evidence from China, Vietnam, and the Philippines

Thumbnail
In emerging East Asia, agricultural output has expanded dramatically over recent decades, primarily as a result of successful efforts to stimulate yield growth. This achievement has increased the availability of food and raw materials in the region, drastically diminished hunger, and more generally provided solid ground for economic development. The intensification of agriculture that has made this possible, however, has also led to serious pollution problems that have adversely affected human and ecosystem health, as well as the productivity of agriculture itself. In the region that currently owes the largest proportion of deaths to the environment, agriculture is often portrayed as a victim of industrial and urban pollution, and this is indeed the case. Yet agriculture is taking a growing toll on economic resources and sometimes becoming a victim of its own success. In parts of China, Vietnam, and the Philippines—the countries studied in The Challenge of Agricultural Pollution—this pattern of highly productive yet highly polluting agriculture has been unfolding with consequences that remain poorly understood. With large numbers of pollutants and sources, agricultural pollution is often undetected and unmeasured. When assessments do occur, they tend to take place within technical silos, and so the different ecological and socioeconomic risks are seldom considered as a whole, while some escape study entirely. However, when agricultural pollution is considered in its entirety, both the significance of its impacts and the relative neglect of them become clear. Meanwhile, growing recognition that a “pollute now, treat later” approach is unsustainable—from both a human health and an agroindustry perspective—has led public and private sector actors to seek solutions to this problem. Yet public intervention has tended to be more reactive than preventive and often inadequate in scale. In some instances, the implementation of sound pollution control programs has also been confronted with incentive structures that do not rank environmental outcomes prominently. Significant potential does exist, however, to reduce the footprint of farms through existing technical solutions, and with adequate and well-crafted government support, its realization is well within reach.

In Rural Tay Ninh, Teach For Vietnam Brings a Jolt of Change to English Teaching

saigoneer.comPublished on Thursday, 05 April 2018 15:39Written by Luca Powell. Photos courtesy of Teach For Vietnam.

Vu Thi Hang’s (not pictured above) teaching style is far from traditional.

In her class, it’s common to find students moving, dancing, acting and singing. In fact, she encourages it.

“I think it helps students to feel the language,” Hang, 25, tells Saigoneer. She describes herself as a theater hobbyist, while also holding a Masters in Asia Pacific Studies. “I like to encourage expression, so the students can try and use the language creatively.”

The kind of creativity and free-play her class fosters is relatively uncommon in most public school English programs in Vietnam. At every rung, from rural county classrooms to top-tier universities, traditional programs have long prioritized reading, writing and grammar as benchmarks for fluency.

Subjects like speaking and listening don’t get enough attention, Hang believes. “When we started teaching our kids, they were scared to speak English. We had to build their confidence.” Tiếp tục đọc “In Rural Tay Ninh, Teach For Vietnam Brings a Jolt of Change to English Teaching” →

VeDIAL: Tham luận của Nguyễn Minh Thuyết tại hội thảo Cải cách giáo dục đại học VED 2014.  Slides của bài tham luận có thể tải về tại Presentation 5: University Autonomy: Realities and Solutions for Vietnam1.

Khái niệm

Nguyễn Tiến Dũng*, blog – ON DECEMBER 1ST, 2014

Tư tưởng của ĐH Princeton: “In the service of all nations”

“The university is an autonomous institution at the heart of societies …”

Why (nuclear) fusion?

thebulletin.org

Robert J. Goldston

The 2014 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report included publication on the web of a wide range of scenarios for the future, produced by energy and environment modelers from all over the world. If we select an  internationally coordinated set of scenarios that are consistent with a temperature rise of less than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above the pre-industrial era—the upper-limit goal of the Paris Climate Accords—and average their projections, we find the projection for future electricity production in the table below, shown in units of annually averaged gigawatts electrical <GWe>.

IPCC Projected Worldwide Annually Averaged Electrical Power Production <GWe>

2020 2050 2100
Solar 30 650 3720
Nuclear 400 1120 2230
Wind 150 930 2170
Biomass 40 540 1500
Hydro 410 640 850
Coal + Oil 920 860 770
Gas 780 980 620
Geothermal 30 84 100
Total 2770 5800 11900

This IPCC-based mean scenario relies heavily on solar and wind, which vary strongly on a daily and seasonal basis. By the time these intermittent energy sources become dominant, later in the century, we may well have developed the capability to mitigate their daily variation using energy storage. Seasonal variation, however, is hundreds of times harder to compensate, and it is difficult to imagine how this can be done effectively. As solar and wind grow in scale they will need to occupy sites with higher variability, and when they become a large fraction of the energy supply, later in the century, the costs associated with their variability will grow.

A University of Montana researcher and her collaborators have published a new study that reveals increased risks for Alzheimer’s and suicide among children and young adults living in polluted megacities.

Dr. Lilian Calderón-Garcidueñas said her group studied 203 autopsies of Mexico City residents ranging in age from 11 months to 40 years. Metropolitan Mexico City is home to 24 million people exposed daily to concentrations of fine particulate matter and ozone above U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. The researchers tracked two abnormal proteins that indicate development of Alzheimer’s, and they detected the early stages of the disease in babies less than a year old. Vietnam is exporting tea mainly in the form of raw materials. In an effort to increase tea export value, both farmers and businesses in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, the country’s largest tea producer, are seeking to develop brand names for their products.

Mr Nguyen Duc Trong, owner of a tea workshop in Thai Nguyen province, has been working hard to promote his products. Trong’s goal is to develop a tea brand and seek outlets for products.

After many attempts, he realized that it was very hard for tea farmers to create brands for their products. Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam Businesses, farmers struggle to develop tea brands” →
