HÀ NỘI —  Thousands of children under the age of five living in Central region drought-hit areas are recovering from malnutrition due to an Emergency nutrition intervention programme project.

The news was revealed in a report from National Institute for Nutrition (NIN) at a seminar held in Hà Nội.

The programme, with financial support worth US$4 million from UNICEF and the Government of Japan, has fulfilled its target of improving nutrition conditions for 7,640 children with severe and acute malnutrition (SAM) in 6 provinces of Ninh Thuận, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Trà Vinh, Hậu Giang and Cà Mau. World Bank report on Vietnam’s pork safety sparks concern, doubt

A recent World Bank report claiming that up to 40 percent of pork in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is potentially contaminated with the salmonella bacteria has raised concern and doubt as to whether the ratio is too high compared with Vietnam’s own statistics.

The World Bank data may not truly reflect the meat safety situation in those cities, according to local insiders.

The report, released on March 27, points out several alarming issues in Vietnam’s food safety risk management, such as the fact that 80 percent of pork is sold in wet markets, and 76 percent of meat is slaughtered in small and dirty facilities.

The World Bank also underlined that the most prevalent microbiological hazard in pork in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is salmonella, with the bacteria found in 30 percent of the pork samples taken at slaughterhouses, and 40 percent of the pork found on sale at local markets. Yvonne van Amerongen is Head of Quality and Innovation at Hogewey, and one of the founders of its internationally award-winning small-scale living model of care.

Yvonne has been working at Vivium Zorggroep since 1983, in particular at nursing home Hogewey. In 1990, she developed a new product which revolutionised care for people developing dementia in the vicinity of the Hogewey nursing home. In 1993, Yvonne became a fulltime project manager for the development of the care project small-scale living with lifestyle for the psycho-geriatrics target group.This project was also the subject matter of her graduation thesis for the Higher Vocational Training in Social Pedagogic Care with a specialisation in Management. Since 1996 Yvonne has been a staff executive for Quality & Innovation for Vivium Zorggroep in Weesp.

Hogewey is located in Weesp, a town outside Amsterdam. Since it opened in 2009, Hogewey has attracted a huge amount of interest from all over Europe, with a centre based on its design currently being built in Switzerland.

SAO PAULO – Brazil’s meat exports effectively collapsed this week, the agricultural minister said Wednesday, as several countries halted imports from the South American country in the wake of a meat inspection scandal.

Brazil is struggling to contain the scandal, in which investigators say that health inspectors were bribed to overlook expired meats and chemicals and that other products were added to meat to improve its appearance and smell. The government has largely tried to downplay the extent of the corruption, while also criticizing the federal police for how they have communicated about it. HANOI: It is 1am and medical student Chu Thương Minh Trang, 22, is squatting on the cold pavement listening intently to Nguyen, a 70-year-old homeless man with a toothy smile on his face.

The street is poorly lit and dirty, but it is this man’s only refuge and home on some nights.

Huddled against the wind chill, Mr Nguyen, who is wrapped up in three layers of clothes, grumbles about how his hands are sore, and his back painful from repairing bicycles. Without hesitation, Ms Chu reaches across and gently massages his knobby fingers.

HO CHI MINH CITY: Having slogged in the tiny, dimly lit kitchen since 4am, the Chau sisters are finally done mixing, kneading, steaming and cooking, some seven hours later.

But, with the sun approaching its noon peak, their day is barely halfway through. Now comes the even more arduous task: Hawking their snacks – a menu of red bean soup, mung bean dumplings, banana cake and an iced peanut drink – in the blazing heat.

Báo Tiền Phong đã nhận công văn 327 “V/v làm rõ một số nội dung trong các bài viết của báo Tiền Phong” do ông Doãn Hữu Long giám đốc Sở Y tế Đắk Lắk (SYT) ký ngày 22/2/2017. Theo CV 327, thì cùng ngày 22/2  SYT còn có CV 321 “trả lời các nội dung nêu trong bài”, còn CV này chỉ “làm rõ hơn các nội dung đã nêu”. Tuy nhiên, SYT không gửi CV 321 cho báo Tiền Phong.

            Trong 2 tháng 10, 11/2016, lãnh đạo UBND tỉnh Đắk Lắk đã ký các quyết định xử phạt hành chính 10 bệnh viện với tổng mức phạt gần 1,7 tỷ đồng, về tội xả nước thải, bụi thải, khí thải gây ô nhiễm, không thực hiện giám sát, quan trắc môi trường. Trong đó, có tới 9/10 đơn vị là bệnh viện công, bị yêu cầu phải khắc phục các vi phạm chậm nhất vào ngày cuối năm 2016.

          Dù báo đài đã đăng, phát rất nhiều bài phanh phui các dấu hiệu tiêu cực, tham nhũng của lãnh đạo Sở Y tế Đắk Lắk, nhưng 2 văn bản chỉ đạo từ Văn phòng Chính phủ về việc phải sớm điều tra làm rõ vấn đề này, xử lý theo đúng pháp luật đến nay vẫn chưa được thực thi. Thực trạng thiếu thuốc, ô nhiễm về nước và rác thải, mua sắm bừa bãi trang thiết bị y tế còn đó, thì Sở Y tế đã lại tiếp tục vi phạm Luật Dược trong việc tổ chức đấu thầu thuốc năm 2017!

Climate change triggers new diseases in Vietnam

Vietnam is among five countries in the world to suffer the most from climate change.

According to the Central Steering Committee on Fighting and Preventing Calamities, the spell of cold weather which lasted from January 22 to January 28, 2016 in the north killed nearly 9,500 cattle and damaged 9,453 hectares of rice fields.

Gà Đông Tảo chết hàng loạt ở Hưng Yên

Đàn gà đang khỏe mạnh bỗng dưng chết khiến nhiều hộ chăn nuôi ở xã Đông Tảo (Hưng Yên) thiệt hại lớn. Chi cục thú ý tỉnh nói nguyên nhân do bệnh tụ huyết trùng.

Thời gian gần đây, trên địa bàn xã Đông Tảo (huyện Khoái Châu, tỉnh Hưng Yên) xuất hiện tình trạng gà chết hàng loạt, khiến nhiều hộ gia đình bị thiệt hại lớn. Một số con gà chết bị vứt bừa bãi gây ô nhiễm nguồn nước và bốc mùi hôi thối.

Bà Nguyễn Thị Xuân (62 tuổi, xã Đông Tảo) nói: “Nhà tôi đối diện mương nước, mấy ngày nay có mùi rất khó chịu bay vào nhà. Cứ  mỗi khi gió lùa là phải đóng kín cửa”.

Chiều 27/2, ông Nguyễn Văn Chiến (Chủ tịch UBND xã Đông Tảo) cho hay tình trạng gà Đông Tảo chết hàng loạt được phát hiện từ dịp gần Tết Nguyên đán, tuy nhiên một số hộ gia đình có gà chết đã giấu thông tin dẫn đến tình trạng dịch bệnh khó kiểm soát.

“Nhiều hộ có gà chết đã lén lút cho gà vào bao tải rồi quăng ra khu vực mương nước hoặc bãi đất trống nơi vắng người qua lại”, ông Chiến nói và thông tin thêm đây thường là những hộ kinh doanh nhỏ lẻ ở quy mô vài chục con gà thành phẩm.

Sáng cùng ngày, UBND xã đã tổ chức lực lượng đi dọn những con gà chết mà người dân vứt bừa bãi để tiến hành tiêu hủy.

“Sau khi phát hiện sự việc, lãnh đạo địa phương đã mời Chi cục thú y tỉnh Hưng Yên về tuyên truyền, hướng dẫn người dân cách phòng tránh dịch. Đồng thời yêu cầu thôn xóm thống kê số lượng gà chết và cố gắng tiêu hủy bằng cách chôn lấp, rắc vôi bột”, ông Chiến cho biết.

Nearly 6,000 chickens have been killed or culled after four months of no reported cases.

Two bird flu outbreaks among poultry have emerged in Vietnam’s central and southern regions, the animal health department said, warning the disease could spread to more areas.
