On June 23, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment granted a licence to the Vinh Tan 1 Thermal Power Plant to sink one million cubic metres of sludge near the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area, one of 16 such areas in the country.

Ho E Not, 44, said the villagers in Dakrong District used to consider tobacco and alcohol indispensable. Most men and women smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol, whatever the occasion. “It had become a custom. Drinking when celebrating new crops, at weddings and funerals,” he said.

Deputy PM asks Indonesia to investigate shooting of Vietnam fishing boat

Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has requested Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry to investigate and clarify reports that an Indonesian naval ship shot and wounded two Vietnamese fishermen last week.
Minh made the request during a phone call with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on Friday, underlining that the shooting was a serious incident that did not match the current soundly-developing strategic partnership between the two countries. Nữ phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao của Việt Nam, bà Lê Thị Thu Hằng nói với báo chí chiều 28/07/2017 giờ Hà Nội, khẳng định rằng hoạt động dầu khí gần đây diễn ra tại khu vực ‘hoàn toàn thuộc chủ quyền’ Việt Nam ở Biển Đông.

Vietnam stopped a company from exploring for energy in contested waters of the South China Sea after taking threats from Beijing, the BBC reported early on Monday.
Talisman-Vietnam, a subsidiary of Spanish energy firm Repsol, commenced gas-drilling operations in an area about 400 kilometers off Vietnam’s coast earlier this month, but Hanoi has since ordered Repsol to leave the zone, the BBC said, citing an unnamed source.
