No American or Allied POWs escaped from North Vietnamese territory 1964 to 1973. Some Allied personnel were able to escape from NLF Viet Cong captivity in South Vietnam from 1963 to 1972. Same with Laos and Cambodia, some personnel escaped from Pathet Lao or Khemer Rouge captivity

The only outlier was US Marine Bobby Garwood who stayed in North Vietnamese hands after the 1973 POW release and 1975 end of South Vietnam. He was captured by the VC in September 1965 in South Vietnam and later moved to North Vietnam proper. His story is too long to write here. In essence he walked away from his guards as he was a fluent Vietnamese speaker and semi free to travel about Hanoi doing errands . He went to the Embassy of Finland and said I am a POW please get me out. Was he a deserter, collaborator or POW who fell through the cracks? His story is one for the books and extremely controversial
