North Korea fires missiles, 3 reach Japan waters

SEOUL: North Korea fired multiple missiles from its Tongchang-ri region, where a missile base is located, early on Monday (Mar 6), South Korea’s military said.

The missiles – fired from the country’s east coast – flew 1,000km, the military added.

Tongchang-ri is near the North’s border with China, where the isolated state fired a long-range rocket last year that put an object into orbit and was condemned by the United Nations for violating resolutions that ban the use of missile technology.

A South Korean military official said the launch, which came at 7.36am (6.36am, Singapore time), was being analysed to determine the type of the projectile used. Tiếp tục đọc “North Korea fires missiles, 3 reach Japan waters”

NIRAS’ first climate change adaptation project in Vietnam

Published: 19-07-2016

Vietnamese women will benefit from NIRAS capabilities in comprehensive water planning (HELVA) at a new, local pilot projectExploiting Synergies between Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and Urban Farming in Vinh Yen, Vietnam – such is the title of HELVAs first international project.

Local women in Vinh Yen will be involved in an urban farming initiative, where water for the vegetables will come from a SUDS system (local drainage of rain water, which is picked up locally, instead of being discharged into the sewer).

The project will run for 2.5 years and has a budget of approximately 500.000 EUR, of which about 63.000 EUR will be allocated to constructing the pilot project.

Preventing floods

The purpose of the project is to make the urban area more resilient to flooding, but also to benefit the local community’s social resilience by giving local women the opportunity to grow vegetables, herbs and spices.

“We hope that a low-budget system like this can inspire other local authorities and the local population to build SUDS systems that do not require large investments, but will add value to the local population,” says Morten Pedersen from water and utility division VAFO in NIRAS.

The project also hope to inspire similar solutions in the rest of Vietnam.

”The project and its ideas have potential for wide application in Viet Nam given the increasing flooding situation and heat island in cities due to both climate change and rapid urbanization. Willingness of the public and local authorities as well as innovative mechanisms for maintaining such a system play a crucial role in the sustainability and success of the project, “ says Luu Duc Cuong from the Ministry of Construction in Vietnam.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

NIRAS won the project in an international competition at Nordic Climate Facility (NCF), which is organized under the Nordic Development Nordic Development Fund (NDF). The project is a result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between:

• Morten Pedersen, water and utility, NIRAS
• Anja Wejs, water and energy, NIRAS
• NIRAS Vietnam (RCCE)
• Vietnam Institute for Urban and Rural Planning (VIUP) and
• Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction
• The City of Vinh Yen

Thai king strips wanted monk of his rank

The symbolic step comes more than two weeks after police surrounded the scandal-hit Dhammakaya temple and began searching for Phra Dhammachayo, who is accused of money laundering.

The standoff at the temple represents one of the biggest challenges to the authority of Thailand’s junta since it took power in 2014. The former abbot has not turned himself in and police say his followers have hampered the search. Tiếp tục đọc “Thai king strips wanted monk of his rank”

Chinese protest against South Korea’s Lotte Group after land deal for THAAD missile-defense system

AFP-JIJI, Reuters Mar 5, 2017

Dozens of people holding posters showing late Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong protested in northeastern Jilin province on Sunday, calling for a boycott of South Korean goods as part of a backlash against the country’s Lotte Group.

The retail giant has faced growing opposition in China since signing a deal last Tuesday to provide land for a U.S. missile-defense system.

The plan to install the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system was prompted by threats from North Korea, but Beijing fears the move will undermine its own military capabilities.

“No to THAAD! Boycott Korean goods!” chanted the protesters. Tiếp tục đọc “Chinese protest against South Korea’s Lotte Group after land deal for THAAD missile-defense system”

Malaysia has declared North Korea’s ambassador persona non grata over the alleged murder of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un‘s half-brother and ordered the diplomat to leave the country within the next 48 hours.

Kang Chol’s expulsion came on Saturday, just weeks after Kim Jong-nam was allegedly poisoned at Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13.

“The expulsion of the DPRK [North Korea] ambassador is… an indication of the government’s concern that Malaysia may have been used for illegal activities,” Malaysia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The decision was made after he failed to appear at Malaysia’s foreign ministry at 6pm local time on Saturday despite being summoned, said Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi, reporting from Kuala Lumpur. Tiếp tục đọc “Malaysia expels North Korea Ambassador Kang Chol”
