HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Six human rights activists were sentenced to harsh prison terms in Vietnam after being convicted of attempting to overthrow the government by advocating a multiparty democracy.

Prominent human rights lawyer Nguyen Van Dai received the most severe penalty of 15 years in prison and five years of house arrest at the one-day trial Thursday, said his lawyer Nguyen Van Mieng. The others received sentences from seven to 12 years.

They were charged with affiliating with a group called Brotherhood for Democracy, whose purpose was to change the leadership of the Communist Party and build a multiparty system. Vietnam's sex industry and the sticky subject of legalizing it

‘Sex workers should have the right to make a living, contribute to society, and enjoy welfare in terms of healthcare and education.’

Vietnamese officials have expressed their concerns about the complicated nature of recognizing prostitution as a job.

Despite being illegal in Vietnam, prostitutes can still be found all over the country’s biggest cities, and the rackets controlling them have come up with countless ways to dodge the law with authorities seemingly helpless to stop the industry’s unchecked development.

Data may vary, but figures from the International Labor Organization (ILO) suggest that there are nearly 101,300 sex workers, including 72,000 women, in Vietnam.

Gần như tất cả các nền văn hóa trên thế giới đều có những nữ khoa học, nữ bác sĩ và nhà phát minh nữ nhưng vì nhiều lí do, tên tuổi của những người phụ nữ này vẫn bị khuất lấp hoặc không được ghi nhận. Đến thời kì “làn sóng nữ quyền lần thứ hai” trỗi dậy vào giữa những năm 1960 đến cuối những năm 1980, những nhà sử học theo chủ nghĩa nữ quyền đã khôi phục lại tên của vô vàn những người phụ nữ vĩ đại trong quá khứ, bao gồm các nhà khoa học và phát minh nữ. Những học giả này đã thách thức các định kiến giới trong những trang sử của hàng thế kỉ đã xóa đi những đóng góp của người phụ nữ trong rất nhiều lĩnh vực bởi các nhà sử học nam.

After being picked up for questioning during the weekend, Trang is currently under house arrest and could be facing imminent arrest. RSF also urges the Vietnamese government to end its crackdown on independent journalists and bloggers or risk paying the consequences.

Myanmar’s government has barred Ashin Wirathu, an ultranationalist Buddhist monk, from public preaching for the past year, saying his speeches helped fuel the violence against the country’s Rohingya ethnic group that the United Nations calls ethnic cleansing.

So he has turned to an even more powerful and ubiquitous platform to get his message out — Facebook.
