America invented silicon solar cells in the 1950s. It spent more on solar R&D than any other country in the 1980s. It lost its technological advantage anyway.

You wouldn’t know it today, but the silicon photovoltaic solar cell—the standard, black-and-copper solar panel you can find on suburban rooftops and solar farms—was born and raised in America.

The technology was invented here. In 1954, three American engineers at Bell Labs discovered that electrons flow freely through silicon wafers when they are exposed to sunlight.
It was deployed here. In 1958, the U.S. Navy bolted solar panels to Vanguard 1, the second American satellite in space.

And for a time, it was even made here. In the 1960s and ’70s, American companies dominated the global solar market and registered most solar patents. We, the leaders of the Group of Seven, met in Cornwall on 11-13 June 2021 determined to beat COVID-19 and build back better.  We remembered everyone who has been lost to the pandemic and paid tribute to those still striving to overcome it. Inspired by their example of collaboration and determination, we gathered united by the principle that brought us together originally, that shared beliefs and shared responsibilities are the bedrock of leadership and prosperity.  Guided by this, our enduring ideals as free open societies and democracies, and by our commitment to multilateralism, we have agreed a shared G7 agenda for global action to:

No longer confined to China’s land territory or its near abroad, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is conducting increasingly complex operations farther and farther from China’s continental borders. Within Asia, the PLA now regularly operates into the far reaches of the South China Sea and deep into the Western Pacific, enforcing China’s territorial claims and preparing to counter U.S. intervention in a regional conflict. Beyond Asia, the PLA is present on the ground, at sea, or in military exercises with foreign partners across the Indian Ocean and into the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Foreign militaries now regularly encounter the PLA, whether in tense incidents or friendly contacts, on their home turf and in the global commons.

Drawn from a 2019 conference jointly organized by NDU, the RAND Corporation, and Taiwan’s Council on Advanced Policy Studies, The PLA Beyond Borders surveys the dimensions of Chinese operations within the Indo-Pacific region and globally. The international contributors look both at the underlying enablers of these activities, including expeditionary capabilities and logistics, command and control, and ISR systems, as well as new and evolving operational concepts and operational patterns. Employing different analytic lenses, they portray a reformed PLA accelerating the pace of its overseas operations and increasing its modernization not only in the traditional domains, but also in space and cyber.

Xã Tân Hóa là “rốn lũ” của huyện vùng cao Minh Hóa, tỉnh Quảng Bình. Để sống chung với lũ, người dân nơi đây đã sử dụng nhà nổi. Cả xã có 600 hộ thì có tới 500 nhà nổi (trừ hộ không bị lũ không xây nhà nổi). Hộ nghèo cũng có thêm một ngôi nhà nổi để chống lũ, phòng thân!

Hà Nội, ngày 17/5/2021 – Quỹ Thúc đẩy Sáng kiến Tư pháp (Quỹ JIFF) tổ chức Hội thảo trực tuyến giới thiệu thông tin về Đợt mời nộp sáng kiến tư pháp lần thứ ba.

Các tổ chức xã hội được thành lập và hoạt động hợp pháp theo quy định của pháp luật Việt Nam, có ít nhất 36 tháng kinh nghiệm tính đến thời điểm nộp sáng kiến và có hoạt động thích hợp được công nhận trong lĩnh vực pháp luật   đều có cơ hội nhận tài trợ trong khoảng 50 đến 75 nghìn EURO (tương đương 1,3 đến 2,07 tỉ đồng) để thực hiện các sáng kiến nhằm “Tăng cường tiếp cận pháp luật và tư pháp trong lĩnh vực bảo vệ môi trường cho các nhóm yếu thế, đặc biệt là phụ nữ, trẻ em, đồng bào dân tộc thiểu số và người nghèo ở Việt Nam”.

Để cung cấp thêm thông tin về vấn đề liên quan đến việc miễn trừ nghĩa vụ bảo hộ quyền sở hữu trí tuệ (SHTT) đối với các sản phẩm y tế phòng chống Covid-19, điển hình là vắc xin, bài viết này giới thiệu cơ sở của việc miễn trừ nghĩa vụ bảo hộ quyền SHTT, các đề xuất và vấn đề liên quan đang được thảo luận tại Tổ chức Thương mại thế giới (WTO).

Ngày 06/5/2021, Đại diện Thương mại Hoa Kỳ, bà Katherine Tai đã đưa ra tuyên bố công khai ủng hộ việc từ bỏ các biện pháp bảo hộ quyền SHTT đối với vắc xin Covid-19 của chính quyền Hoa Kỳ. Nhiều nước thành viên WTO và các tổ chức phi chính phủ, điển hình là Liên minh vắc xin nhân dân1 đã bày tỏ quan điểm ủng hộ tuyên bố này. Mới đây nhất, ngày 20/5/2021, Nghị viện châu Âu cũng đã thông qua việc kêu gọi Liên minh châu Âu (EU) ủng hộ đề xuất nói trên. Về phía Việt Nam, ngày 13/5/2021, người phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao Việt Nam đã phát biểu thể hiện quan điểm ủng hộ việc miễn trừ nghĩa vụ bảo hộ quyền SHTT đối với vắc xin Covid-19 để vắc xin sớm được phổ biến rộng rãi đến tất cả các nước trên thế giới.

Tuần này đánh dấu một cột mốc quan trọng của Rồng Xanh khi giải cứu nạn nhân của mua bán người thứ 1000. 

Hành trình của chúng tôi bắt đầu năm 2005, khi người sáng lập của Rồng Xanh vô tình gặp một cậu bé 13 tuổi trên đường phố Hồ Chí Minh. Cậu bé người Huế bị lừa bán bởi những lời hứa sai sự thật, bị bắt bán hoa trên đường phố và nộp tiền cho một nhóm bảo kê. Sau khi giải cứu và đưa cậu bé trở về nhà ở Huế, chúng tôi biết được một sự thật rằng có hàng trăm trẻ em khác cũng bị mua bán để làm việc trên đường phố hoặc bị bóc lột trong các xưởng may. 

Năm 2005, Rồng Xanh giải cứu nạn nhân đầu tiên của mua bán người một cách tình cờ. Nhưng kể từ giờ phút đó, chúng tôi cam kết chống lại tội ác này bằng sự lựa chọn. Bởi chúng tôi tin rằng mỗi một cá nhân đều có quyền và sự tự do để quyết định họ muốn trở thành ai, họ muốn làm gì và họ muốn ở bên cạnh ai.

Trong ký ức của nhiều người trước khi nhà máy thủy điện Thác Bà chưa được xây dựng, dòng sông Chảy trở thành tuyến giao thông huyết mạch nối các tỉnh Phú Thọ, Tuyên Quang, Yên Bái, Lào Cai. Hai anh em Vũ Văn Uyên, Vũ Văn Mật đã chọn vùng đất ven sông Chảy lập đại bản doanh chống lại quan lại địa phương hà hiếp dân chúng, sau đó mở rộng sang tận Tuyên Quang, Lào Cai đào thành đắp lũy giúp vua Lê Anh Tông và Lê Trang Tông chống lại nhà Mạc, được phong là Gia quốc công, hay còn gọi là Chúa Bầu. Phần lớn những thành quách đã trở thành phế tích hay chìm dưới lòng hồ Thác Bà.

Several weeks ago, I travelled east from Hanoi, through industrial estates and rice paddies, to the port of Haiphong in northern Vietnam. My driver took me over a causeway to Cat Hai Island, where something big is taking shape: the building of Vietnam’s first “national car” brand, VinFast. 

In what will eventually be a $3.5bn project, Vietnam’s largest private company, Vingroup, controlled by the country’s richest man, Pham Nhat Vuong, has built an integrated production plant on top of piles driven into the soil and on land reclaimed from the sea. A robot-filled state-of-the-art factory was constructed in about 21 months — a turnround so swift that, when I opened Google Maps to check our location, the app thought I was standing offshore in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Our luck has run out. The worst pandemic in a century has killed over 3.7 million people globally. In the United States, almost 600,000 have lost their lives to COVID-19. Societies around the world have been, and many are continuing to be, devastated.

The debate regarding the origins of the virus continues with growing circumstantial evidence that the virus leaked from a laboratory. Knowing the origins of SARS-CoV-2 is important if we want to prevent this catastrophe from happening again.

Tasked with writing a five-paragraph, humorous essay about the epic last year, Brenneise’s students have come up with different reasons why they picked one answer over the other. For some, “every day is pajamas day” or “noisily slurping cereal through the first block, sleeping through second, and noisily slurping ramen through third” were the highlights of their year. For others, the year brought challenges like messing up a class recording by unmuting and shouting “CHICKEN WINGS!” or getting kicked out of Google Meet and having unsupervised time. The whole class may never forget when they all unmuted at once, screaming and scaring a student who was sleeping through a lesson.
