Green water – the rainwater available to plants in the soil – is indispensable for life on and below the land. But in a new study, we found that widespread pressure on this resource has crossed a critical limit.

The planetary boundaries framework – a concept that scientists first discussed in 2009 – identified nine processes that have remained remarkably steady in the Earth system over the last 11,700 years. These include a relatively stable global climate and an intact biosphere that have allowed civilisations based on agriculture to thrive. Researchers proposed that each of these processes has a boundary that, once crossed, puts the Earth system, or substantial components of it, at risk of upset.

The United Nations said that three of its peacekeepers were killed in ongoing anti-U.N. protests that turned violent in eastern Congo on Tuesday, while several civilians were also killed in the violence.

“At the MONUSCO Butembo base today, violent attackers snatched weapons from Congolese police and fired upon our uniformed personnel,” U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York.

MONUSCO is the acronym for the U.N. Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Protesters in Butembo, in the eastern province of North Kivu, accuse the U.N. of having failed to protect them from an escalation of violence from armed groups.

Child malnutrition a huge regional challenge: study

A large-scale study has highlighted the “triple burden” of child malnutrition in Southeast Asia – coexistence of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight/obesity.

These three burdens often coexist in the same country and can even occur in the same family.

The study of nearly 14,000 children aged six months to 12 years in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand was conducted between 2019 and 2021. The children were from urban and rural schools, community health centers and sub-district administrative organizations in the four countries.

Khoảng 4h chiều 23/7, người dân ấp 6, xã Vĩnh Lộc A, huyện Bình Chánh phát hiện ngôi nhà gia đình anh Nguyễn Vĩnh Phước đang thuê, bỗng nhiên bốc cháy. Mọi người hô hoán nhau chạy tới phá cửa, đập tường, dội nước dập lửa. Trong nhà, lúc đó có Nguyễn Đào Phú Quý (10 tuổi) cùng 5 đứa em nhỏ. Cậu bé kéo bốn đứa em ra lan can gác lửng và kêu mọi người cứu giúp còn mình tiếp tục lao vào trong nhà để cứu bé út gần một tuổi.

Trong lúc mọi người cố gắng đưa bốn em nhỏ xuống, một cậu bé sinh kế Quý nhất quyết cầm chặt sợi dây, đứng mãi ở lan can nhìn vào trong nhà, chờ anh trai với bé út xuống cùng. Người dân phải kéo mạnh tay mới đưa bé xuống đất an toàn.

EU Approves Vaccine for Monkeypox in Wake of WHO Emergency DeclarationThe European Union (EU) followed Canada and the United States in approving Bavarian Nordic’s smallpox vaccine for use against monkeypox (Reuters), the Danish drugmaker said. The step comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern and urged countries to step up their disease surveillance and response efforts.
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus overruled an inconclusive WHO panel of advisors to make the declaration, saying “too little” is understood (NYT) about the current outbreak. More than sixteen thousand monkeypox cases have been reported in seventy-five countries since early May. Vaccines have been made available in some countries, though their global supply is relatively small (Vox).

Grim footage of dead corals at a Vietnamese marine reserve, as far as the eye can see, has reignited calls for better environmental action as even a two-year pandemic pause in tourism has done little to help the ecosystem recover.

Last month, pictures and videos of dead coral stretching hundreds of square metres at Hon Mun Island struck the public’s nerve and prompted local authorities to restrict swimming and diving in the marine reserve until it fully inspected the area. The dead reef is situated in Nha Trang Bay, the first of 16 Marine Protected Areas in Vietnam.

The Abraham Accords and the Genesis of I2U2

The quadrilateral grouping was popularly dubbed as the “West Asian Quad” until last year, has now graduated to become “I2U2″. The signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and the UAE, the ongoing talks of an FTA between India and Israel, coupled with the already existing FTA between the UAE and Israel, can help this grouping triangulate the economic partnership.

The signing of the Abraham Accords and the subsequent normalisation of formal diplomatic relations between Israel and the UAE, followed by Israel and Bahrain, have reconfigured the political alignments of West Asia. In a world which is passing through uncertain times, characterized by power rivalries, armed conflicts, the looming fear of food crisis coupled with pessimistic market sentiments in a post-pandemic era, the Abraham Accords have not only created opportunities for bilateral engagements between the countries of West Asia but also have led to the creation of a Quadrilateral cooperative framework between India, Israel, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

Từ giữa năm 2021 đến nay, các phóng viên, cộng tác viên Báo Thanh Niên đã có nhiều chuyến công tác, ghi nhận việc tàu thuyền trung quốc vẫn neo đậu dài ngày, tại một số bãi đá ngầm ở quần đảo Trường Sa (khánh Hòa).

“Nếu như giữa năm 2021, các tàu cá Trung Quốc tập trung hàng trăm chiếc, cao điểm lên đến gần 300 chiếc tại bãi Ba Đầu, thì đến nay chỉ có khoảng 30 chiếc nằm lì ăn vạ trong bãi”.

“Nhẵn mặt từ mấy năm nay”

Đó là khẳng định của nhiều thuyền trưởng tàu cá của huyện đảo Phú Quý (Bình Thuận) thường xuyên đánh bắt thủy sản ở cụm đảo Sinh Tồn, và cho biết thêm: “Số neo đậu phía ngoài và tản mát ở các khu vực lân cận khoảng gần 100 chiếc. Tất cả đều là tàu dân binh Trung Quốc và chúng tôi đã nhẵn mặt từ mấy năm nay”.
