The U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed Daniel Kritenbrink, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, to be the U.S. ambassador to Vietnam.

The nomination was made at a Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday morning (local time), according to an agenda posted by the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States wants a meeting soon aimed at reviving a four-way dialogue between itself, Japan, India and Australia to deepen security cooperation and coordinate alternatives for regional infrastructure financing to that offered by China, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

BEIJING: Military relations between China and the United States are a positive force in ties, and China wants to deepen mutual trust and cooperation, China’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday ahead of a visit to Beijing by U.S. President Donald Trump.

SINGAPORE: The US Navy will not only continue its influence in Asia Pacific, but “intends to grow it”. This was the message reiterated by Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer, said Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen of their meeting at the Pentagon on Wednesday (Oct 25).

Pyongyang (CNN)A senior North Korean official has issued a stern warning to the world that it should take “literally” his country’s threat to test a nuclear weapon above ground.

The official, Ri Yong Pil, told CNN in an exclusive conversation in Pyongyang that the threat made by North Korea’s foreign minister last month should not be dismissed. North Korea “has always brought its words into action,” Ri said, visibly angry.

Speaking on a visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly last month, Ri Yong Ho, the foreign minister, raised the possibility that North Korea could test a powerful hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean. The threat came hours after US President Donald Trump threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea in a speech to the UN.

SEOUL: South Korea and the United States began week-long joint Navy drills in the waters around the Korean peninsula on Monday (Oct 16), amid high tensions over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programme.

About 40 Navy ships from both countries, including the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, are taking part in the exercises on the east and west coasts of the peninsula from Oct 16 to Oct 20, a spokesman for the South’s defence ministry said on Monday.
