The UN is tasked with tackling many urgent issues of global importance, from humanitarian crises to peacekeeping operations and the climate crisis. This all comes at a cost, but not as much as you might think. With the 2024 budget recently approved, we crunch the numbers.

Just before Christmas, the 193 Member States that make up the UN General Assembly signed off a $3.59 billion budget to cover the expenses of the UN Secretariat in 2024. That’s a lot of money but, as UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq explained to UN News, there’s plenty of bang for each buck spent.

Farhan Haq: When you add up the regular UN Secretariat and peacekeeping budgets, the annual average cost of the UN for each person on the planet is about $1.25; that’s about the cost of a bag of chips in New York.

Aside from the U.N. Secretariat, the United Nations also comprises a vast range of agencies, funds, programmes and peacekeeping missions to deal with all kinds of issues, which are funded separately, and which are not included in the $3.59 billion budget. 

At the high end you have agencies such as the World Food Programme, the refugee agency (UNHCR) and the children’s fund (UNICEF), which have budgets in the billions of dollars. Smaller agencies deal with, for example, maritime affairs, world tourism or civil aviation, and have budgets set accordingly. Member States join and pay dues for these agencies on a voluntary basis.

Ban on protests supporting Palestinians is disproportionate attack on the right to protest in France

Following the request from the Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin asking the prefects in France to ban all pro-Palestinian demonstrations, Jean-Claude Samouiller, President of Amnesty International France said:

“The ban on all demonstrations in support of the Palestinians in France constitutes a serious and disproportionate attack on the right to demonstrate.

Faced with the atrocities committed by Hamas in southern Israel, and also the blockade and very heavy bombings in the Gaza Strip, it is important that civil society actors can mobilize peacefully and publicly, in particular those calling on those engaged in the conflict to respect the rights of civilian populations. This is why there cannot be a systematic ban on the right to peacefully demonstrate support for the rights of the Palestinian populations.

Under international law, a ban on demonstrations can only be considered as a last resort. Authorities should always seek to protect and facilitate the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in the first place.Jean-Claude Samouiller, President of Amnesty International France

A ban can only be legal if it is motivated by a specific threat and if it is demonstrated that no other less restrictive measure could guarantee public order.”

Hiện nay Việt Nam có khoảng 7 triệu người khuyết tật, chiếm hơn 7,06% dân số từ 2 tuổi trở lên, trong đó người khuyết tật nặng và đặc biệt nặng chiếm khoảng 28,9%, khoảng 10% người khuyết tật thuộc hộ nghèo. Số liệu này cho thấy, Việt Nam là một trong những nước có tỷ lệ người khuyết tật khá cao so với tổng dân số trong khu vực châu Á-Thái Bình Dương.

Đây là thông tin được đưa ra tại lễ kỷ niệm 30 năm Ngày Quốc tế về người khuyết tật (3/12) và diễn đàn “Lắng nghe tiếng nói của người khuyết tật” do Ủy ban quốc gia về người khuyết tật Việt Nam, Chương trình phát triển của Liên hợp quốc (UNDP) và Hội Người khuyết tật thành phố Hà Nội phối hợp tổ chức hôm nay 1/12.

Competitions commence with host nations organizing spectacular opening ceremonies full of pageantry and, at times, peculiarities. At the 2012 London opening ceremony, organizers screened a film showing James Bond and Queen Elizabeth II, with stunt doubles later parachuting into the stadium. U.N. council adopts first Myanmar resolution in decades

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 21 (Reuters) – The U.N. Security Council adopted its first resolution on Myanmar in 74 years on Wednesday to demand an end to violence and urge the military junta to release all political prisoners, including ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myanmar has been in crisis since the army took power from Suu Kyi’s elected government on Feb. 1, 2021, detaining her and other officials and responding to pro-democracy protests and dissent with lethal force.

It has long been split on how to deal with the Myanmar crisis, with China and Russia arguing against strong action. They both abstained from the vote on Wednesday, along with India. The remaining 12 members voted in favor.

“China still has concerns,” China’s U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun told the council after the vote. “There is no quick fix to the issue … Whether or not it can be properly resolved in the end, depends fundamentally, and only, on Myanmar itself.”

He said China had wanted the Security Council to adopt a formal statement on Myanmar, not a resolution.

Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said Moscow did not view the situation in Myanmar as a threat to international peace and security and therefore believed it should not be dealt with by the U.N. Security Council.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed the resolution’s adoption. “This is an important step by the Security Council to address the crisis and end the Burma military regime’s escalating repression and violence against civilians,” he said in a statement.

‘FIRST STEP’

Until now the council had only agreed formal statements on Myanmar, where the army also led a 2017 crackdown on Rohingya Muslims that was described by the United States as genocide. Myanmar denies genocide and said it was waging a legitimate campaign against insurgents who attacked police posts.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. refugee chief sharply criticized the Security Council and world leaders Thursday for failing to prevent and resolve conflicts that have displaced nearly 66 million people around the world.

“You there in the United Nations, you do not know diplomacy,” Mr. Duterte said. “You do not know how to behave, to be an employee of the United Nations. You do not talk to me like that, you son of a bitch.”

Mr. Duterte’s denunciations were directed at Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, who called on Tuesday for the authorities in the Philippines to begin an investigation after Mr. Duterte boasted about personally gunning down criminal suspects while mayor of Davao City.

On September 2, 1945, in the Declaration of Independence to establish the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, President Ho Chi Minh quoted the US Declaration of Independence saying: “All men are created equally. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”. Throughout the past 70 years, Viet Nam has been striving for a better life for its people. VNN – Một số nước châu Á đang cân nhắc xem xét giảm, hạn chế, thậm chí xóa bỏ hình phạt tử hình đối với nhiều tội danh, trong đó có tội buôn bán ma túy với chủ trương đề cao hiệu quả phòng ngừa và tính nhân đạo trong việc xử lý người phạm tội.

Trong đó, 98 nước (màu xanh lá cây) bỏ hình phạt tử hình; 7 nước bỏ hình phạt tử hình cho các tội danh thông thường (tím); 35 nước có án tử hình nhưng không thi hành trên thực tế (vàng nhạt); còn lại 58 nước – đỏ) vẫn duy trì hình phạt tử hình.

Thứ trưởng Nguyễn Quốc Cường đã nêu bật những nỗ lực của Việt Nam trong thực hiện các cam kết quốc tế về quyền con người, trong đó có việc các khuyến nghị cơ chế Rà soát Định kỳ Phổ quát (UPR) chu kỳ 2 đã được chấp thuận, các cam kết tự nguyện với tư cách thành viên HĐNQ, phê chuẩn Công ước Chống tra tấn và Công ước về Quyền của Người Khuyết tật.
