One day, Tieu, a Giay ethnic minority woman, stepped out of her house to visit a neighbor without asking for her husband’s permission, her husband threatened to abandon her.

She had never before dared to do that during two decades of marriage. This time, Tieu did it on purpose. “I wanted to see how my husband would react. I wanted freedom,” said Tieu.

Challenges to the Safety and Protection of Journalists

gijn – Editor’s Note: The International Women’s Media Foundation prepared this report, An Overview Of The Current Challenges To The Safety And Protection Of Journalists, in support of a UNESCO meeting last week, News Organizations Standing Up for the Safety of Media Professionals.” GIJN is grateful to the IWMF for letting us excerpt the sections below, on safety practices and recommendations. The full report is available here.

Current Safety Practices and Guidelines, and the Gaps for Journalists’ Safety

Recently, there has been a concerted effort to improve safety for journalists by media professionals across the world. Several media development organizations are dedicated solely to the issue of journalists’ safety. Appendix A includes a consolidated list of organizations working on this issue, although it should be noted that many others are also engaged on this topic. Leading media professionals have collaborated to create guidelines and initiatives. This report does not seek to replicate those guidelines, but to briefly highlight them in order to illustrate what has been and is being done on the issue of journalists’ safety and to shine a spotlight on areas where change is needed. ipsnews– HELSINKI, May 5 2016 (IPS) – The freedom of the press is a universally cherished democratic right, but what may have been overlooked as the World Day Freedom of Information was celebrated on Wednesday is that the ability of journalists to protect their source is increasingly coming under attack by authorities.

U.S. Likely to Lift Ban on Arms Sales to Vietnam

U.S. Likely to Lift Ban on Arms Sales to Vietnam

The White House appears poised to end a ban on arms sales to Vietnam in time for a landmark visit by President Barack Obama later this month, despite misgivings from some lawmakers and human rights advocates.

The step would carry crucial symbolism in the growing contest for influence between China and the United States in the Western Pacific and also for America’s relationship with Hanoi that has come full circle since the dark days of the Vietnam War. Time to let go: Remaking Humanitarian action for modern area

Despite a decade of system-wide reforms, the humanitarian sector is still falling short in the world’s most enduring crises.

ODI – The humanitarian system is simply not doing a good job in the eyes of the people it aims to help.

It is time for the humanitarian sector to let go of some of the fundamental – but outdated – assumptions, structures and behaviours that prevent it from adapting to meet the needs of people in crises.

This is a proposal for radical change to create a humanitarian system that is fit to respond to the challenges of both today and tomorrow. It calls for:

The case for change

The humanitarian system is caring for more wounded and more hungry people in more places than was conceivable even a generation ago.

Yet, despite this progress, it is struggling to keep pace with the growing demands placed on it. Tiếp tục đọc “Time to let go: Remaking Humanitarian action for modern area”

5 ways public-private partnerships can promote gender equality

blog.worldbank – From my corner of the World Bank, the development objective of promoting gender equality can seem vague or unrelated to what we do. We can give three cheers for our colleagues who focus on gender issues for successfully developing and releasing  the World Bank’s new Gender Equality, Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Growth Strategy — and then return to our work of closing the infrastructure financing gap and helping governments prioritize their infrastructure projects.

But are there areas in our own work on public-private partnerships (PPPs) where we can and should evaluate the role gender plays? Based on the quantity of literature my colleagues at the PPP Infrastructure Resource Center (PPIRC) have amassed in version 1.0 of their impact of PPPs on gender inclusion page of their website, the answer is yes. PRESS RELEASE

asiapacific.unwomen – Bangkok, Thailand – There are more women media professionals than ever in many countries across Asia-Pacific, but they still represent only three out of 10 newsroom staff, often earn less than their male counterparts and are subject to sexual harassment, while struggling to reach decision-making positions.

Rare rallies in Vietnam over mysterious mass fish deaths
