Vietnam Communist Party Expels Academic Over Facebook Posts

HANOI (REUTERS) – A Vietnamese academic has been expelled from the ruling Communist Party for posting comments on Facebook deemed to be critical of the party, the government said on Friday.

Tran Duc Anh Son, deputy head of the Danang Institute for Socio-Economic Development, was accused of “writing Facebook posts that were untrue and went against the party’s views and state policies and laws,” the government said in a statement.

Son had been critical at what he perceived as a soft approach by Vietnam on the South China Sea issue with China. Vietnam and China have long been embroiled in maritime disputes in the potentially energy-rich maritime territory. HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Six human rights activists were sentenced to harsh prison terms in Vietnam after being convicted of attempting to overthrow the government by advocating a multiparty democracy.

Prominent human rights lawyer Nguyen Van Dai received the most severe penalty of 15 years in prison and five years of house arrest at the one-day trial Thursday, said his lawyer Nguyen Van Mieng. The others received sentences from seven to 12 years.

They were charged with affiliating with a group called Brotherhood for Democracy, whose purpose was to change the leadership of the Communist Party and build a multiparty system. HONG KONG — At Monument Books, a bookstore in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the magazine racks are stacked with copies of The Economist and other titles from Britain, Australia, France and the United States.

But one top-selling magazine there was founded in Phnom Penh and takes its name — Mekong Review — from the mighty river that runs beside the city’s low-rise downtown.

Bị cáo Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh (tức blogger Mẹ Nấm), bị tuyên phạt 10 năm tù về tội “tuyên truyền chống Nhà nước CHXHCN Việt Nam”.

Hôm nay, TAND tỉnh Khánh Hòa mở phiên tòa xét xử sơ thẩm vụ án “tuyên truyền chống Nhà nước CHXHCN Việt Nam”, đối với bị cáo Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh (tức Mẹ Nấm, 38 tuổi, trú P.Vĩnh Phước, TP Nha Trang).

Chiều cùng ngày, HĐXX đã tuyên phạt bị cáo Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh 10 năm tù về tội danh nêu trên.

Theo cáo trạng, năm 2010, Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh tạo lập tài khoản facebook “Mẹ Nấm”, sau đó nhiều lần thay đổi tên hiển thị là “Mẹ Nấm Gấu”, “Nguyen Nhu Quynh”, “Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh”.

BANGKOK: A Thai man was jailed for 35 years on Friday (Jun 9) for Facebook posts deemed insulting to the royal family, a watchdog said, in one of the harshest sentences handed down for a crime that insulates Thailand’s ultra-rich monarchy from criticism.

Cẩn trọng với bất cứ điều gì dính líu tới chính trị, giới trẻ tinh hoa ở Trung Quốc đang giúp chính phủ loại bỏ vụ thảm sát Thiên An Môn ra khỏi ký ức.

Tôi vẫn còn nhớ lần đầu tiên tôi nói chuyện về sự kiện Thiên An Môn với bạn cùng phòng của mình. Đó là đêm trước lần kỷ niệm thứ 20 của ngày 4 tháng 6.

“Này, các cậu có biết ngày hôm nay là ngày gì không?”

“Ngày 4 tháng 6.”

“Còn gì nữa?” “Tao biết mày muốn nói gì,” bạn nằm ở giường dưới tôi nói. “Đó là ngày kỷ niệm. Nhưng chúng ta có thể làm gì được?”

Sự thụ động đó không phải là ngoại lệ trong giới trẻ ngày nay ở Trung Quốc. Thật là một ý nghĩ thời thượng để hy vọng rằng lớp người trẻ và có học ở Trung Quốc muốn giữ ngọn lửa cháy của những sinh viên biểu tình và kêu gọi cải cách dân chủ vào mùa hè năm 1989, chỉ để hứng chịu cuộc đụng độ chết chóc với quân lính ở quanh Quảng trường Thiên An Môn Trung tâm Bắc Kinh vào ngày 4 tháng 6. Nhưng từ tất cả những gì tôi thấy và nghe được, giới trẻ có học và lớp tinh hoa của Trung Quốc không quan tâm đến việc giữ ký ức về thảm sát Thiên An Môn, mà báo chí chính thống không đề cập đến và đảng Cộng sản cầm quyền gần như xóa bỏ hoàn toàn khỏi những diễn văn hay bài viết công khai. (NLĐO)- Đó là câu nói thách thức của một nhân viên kỹ thuật người nước ngoài làm việc tại công ty đóng trên địa bàn quận 12, TP HCM sau khi (CN) phản ứng cách quản lý hà khắc của công ty. Sự việc xảy ra cách nay chưa lâu.

Demonstrators marched in Vietnam’s capital on Monday to mark the 28th anniversary of a bloody naval battle with China and to denounce China’s growing assertiveness in the hotly contested waters of the South China Sea.

About 150 people wearing headbands and carrying large banners circled the busy streets around Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem lake chanting “Down with invasive China”.
