An explosion took place early Wednesday in Bac Ninh Province, killing two children, aged one and five, and leaving six others injured, said local officials.
The incident, which destroyed seven houses and unroofed another 10, took place at a scrap facility in a residential area in Yen Phong District, some 40 kilometers (24 miles) northeast of Hanoi.
All what’s left of the facility is now a three-meter deep pit.
The explosion was caused by explosives of unknown origin stored at the facility, said the provincial chair Nguyen Tu Quynh based on preliminary investigation.
Police and soldiers are at the scene rescuing people still stuck under the rubble as well as clearing the site.
Nguyen Van Tuan and his family, who live 30 meters from the scrap facility, were woken up at around 4:30 a.m. to deafening sounds of the explosion as the ground shook, houses collapsed and warheads rained down.
“I run away with my wife and children, stepping over warheads. Only around 1 kilometer away from the scene, there were no more warheads, Tuan said.”
Authorities estimate that the explosion could be felt as far as 5 kilometers from the scene.

Ngô Thị Thúy Hằng gave up her stable, high-paid job in Hồ Chí Minh City to move to Hà Nội, almost 1,800 kilometres away. She has seemingly forsaken her youth in the quest for martyrs’ remains, leading the Centre of Legal Consultancy and Assistance for Families of War Martyrs (MARIN) through a long development journey of trials and tribulations.
The stable present
Ten years after we first met, Hằng is still a slim woman, but wrinkles have appeared in the corners of her eyes. I was startled to realise that this woman really had spent all her youth on MARIN, forsaking marriage and wealth. The army engineers in Nghe An have reported collecting up to 240 shrapnel bombs from a field in Nghi Truong commune, Nghi Loc district.

Sau sáu năm thực hiện, từ tháng 9 năm 2017 bộ phim tài liệu The Vietnam War (Chiến tranh Việt Nam) gồm mười phần với tổng thời lượng 18 tiếng sẽ lên sóng truyền hình toàn nước Mỹ qua hệ thống PBS (Public Broadcasting Service, mạng truyền thông công cộng bất vụ lợi với 349 đài truyền hình thành viên tại Hoa Kỳ).

Như vậy, cùng với giải Pulitzer 2016 trao cho tiểu thuyết The Sympathizer (Cảm tình viên) của nhà văn Mỹ gốc Việt Nguyễn Thanh Việt, bộ phim mới đang được giới truyền thông dành nhiều quan tâm này cho thấy người Mỹ vẫn chưa thể quên Việt Nam dù cuộc chiến tranh giữa hai nước đã được cho là kết thúc hơn 40 năm. German authorities are under pressure to remove unexploded WWII bombs [Peter Steffen/AFP]More than 50,000 people were evacuated from Germany’s northern city of Hanover on Sunday in one of the country’s largest post-war operations to defuse unexploded World War II-era bombs.
Residents in a densely populated part of the city were ordered to leave their homes for the operation, planned since mid-April, to remove several recently discovered unexploded bombs.
Authorities had expected to remove at least five explosive devices, but only three were found. Two were defused successfully, while the third required special equipment to be made safe.
