In addition to standard aircraft carrier and warship patrol operations in the open sea, naval action during the Vietnam War developed a character of its own. HANOI: With repeated Chinese intrusions into oil-rich Vanguard Bank and anticipated departure of ExxonMobil from the Blue Whale project, the South China Sea dispute has reached a turning point. A planned meeting between presidents Donald Trump and Nguyễn Phú Trọng could be pivotal for a strategic partnership, but is unlikely to happen any time soon.
During the Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi in February, Trump invited Trọng to visit Washington with discussions expected on the South China Sea, the US-Vietnam strategic partnership and the Blue Whale project. Vietnam is a country bursting with youthful energy. The nearly 100 million Vietnamese have an average age of just 31, and despite living under single-party communist rule, they have a thriving capitalist economy that may hit 10% growth this year. And, of great importance to the U.S. and its allies, Vietnam is strategically positioned along the western side of the South China Sea, and has a series of maritime disputes with its neighbors, especially China.

The US Navy is planning two major visits to Vietnam this year as part of efforts to strengthen maritime relations between the two armies.

The US “would welcome the opportunity for another aircraft carrier visit to Vietnam this year,” saying that the move shows the mutual respect that each nation has for each other and the depth of the two countries’ growing partnership, Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command Admiral Philip Davidson said at a press meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on April 18, VnExpress reported. Hanoi (VNA) – President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) Nguyen Phuong Nga on April 16 presented the Friendship Order, a notable distinction of the Vietnamese State, to Executive Director of the War Legacies Project (WLP) Susan Marie Hammond.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nga said that this is one of the highest decorations that the Vietnamese state presents to individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to the friendship between Vietnam and countries worldwide. Ông Davidson nói rằng mối quan hệ quân sự giữa Bộ tư lệnh mà ông chỉ huy và quân đội Việt Nam “ưu tiên củng cố năng lực hàng hải của Việt Nam, vốn sẽ được hỗ trợ bởi việc Việt Nam mua Scan Eagle UAV (máy bay trinh sát không người lái) và máy bay huấn luyện T-6, và một chiếc tàu thứ hai của Lực lượng Tuần duyên Mỹ”, theo văn bản chuẩn bị sẵn cho cuộc điều trần tại Ủy ban Quân vụ Thượng viện Mỹ.
