Residents in the southern Vietnamese province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau have blocked a local road as a last resort in their battle against the damage and pollution caused by trucks traveling to and from a nearby port.

The barricade first went up around 8:30 am on Wednesday, when residents living along the road leading to the Duc Hanh Inland Port in Tan Phuoc Commune, Tan Thanh District decided they had finally had enough.

ASEAN Could Take Lead on Plastic Crisis in Asia

Asia Foundation

April 19, 2017

By John J. Brandon

April 22 marks Earth Day around the globe. I was in 8th grade when Earth Day was first commemorated in 1970, and to mark the day, I participated in annual trash clean-up events at my school. At that time, my world was pretty much the town where I grew up in New Jersey and I didn’t think very much about the rest of the world, I just wanted my neighborhood to be clean. But eight years later, my world expanded when I went to live and work in Bangkok. I vividly remember being struck by the amount of plastic bags, bottles, and wrapping on the streets and in the city’s once-many canals. Now, after four decades of traveling in Southeast Asia, I have witnessed the plague of the plastic bag across pretty much every major city in the region.

Permanent measures sought to prevent fish deaths in Saigon’s iconic canal

Tuoi Tre News

Updated : 04/15/2017 08:20 GMT + 7

Experts and authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are concerned over the mass fish deaths occurring in an iconic canal following unseasonal rains.

The phenomenon has been happening for years along the Nhieu Loc- Thi Nghe Canal, typically at the beginning of the annual rainy season, though unseasonal downpours earlier this month seem to have had the same fatal affect on the canal’s marine life.

Though the reason behind the phenomenon has already been determined, a variety of proposed solutions has failed to bring about a permanent fix. Tiếp tục đọc “Permanent measures sought to prevent fish deaths in Saigon’s iconic canal”

14 November 2016

The investigation comes a few days before the Southeast Asian nation hosts an international conference on stopping the illicit trade.

On Saturday, Vietnamese authorities in the capital ground down and burned two tonnes of ivory and 70kg of rhino – all seized from smugglers –  in a symbolic move designed to show the government’s commitment to thwarting wildlife crime.
