Indigenous group takes Brazil to court in landmark case

by Sam Cowie | Thomson Reuters Foundation  Friday, 21 April 2017 09:00 GMT

This is the first time the Brazilian state stands accused of indigenous rights violations at an international courtBy Sam Cowie

SAO PAULO, April 21 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – An international human rights commission has accused Brazil of failing to obey its own constitution and ringfence ancient tribal territories in a landmark court case that pits the state against indigenous people.

Brazil could be forced to pay damages if it loses the trial in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which is hearing evidence from both sides in Guatemala.

“This case could strengthen the fight of indigenous people, who continue to have their rights threatened in Brazil,” said Raphaela Lopes, a lawyer at Global Justice, a non-governmental organisation that is supporting the case.

The case seeks to end a vicious dispute over land which the indigenous Xucuru people say has dragged on for 27 years, cost it lives and threatens to erode an ancient way of life.

“Our case is emblematic of indigenous people across Brazil,” Marcos Xucuru, leader of the indigenous group, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by telephone.

“More than 20 years after the constitution, demarcating land is still in chaos, during which time violence against indigenous people continues to increase,” said Xucuru.

Brazil has been a pioneer in setting aside – or demarcating – parcels of land for its indigenous people, a process meant to safeguard their culture, ward off unwelcome incomers and enshrine legal rights over ancient turf. Tiếp tục đọc “Indigenous group takes Brazil to court in landmark case”

A garbage collection station in District 3 of HCM City.

At the collection stations, rubbish is collected, sorted for disposal and then transferred to dumping sites or treatment zones, but these unhygienic tasks have been performed in public areas.

Meanwhile, current garbage stations are dilapidated and overloaded, polluting the environment and becoming a nightmare for those living nearby.

A garbage collection station located at the Quang Trung-Tan Son Intersection in Go Vap District is an example. The station has become a nightmare for local people, including hundreds of students and teachers from the school nearby.

Le Van Truc, resident in Ward 8, told Ha Noi Moi (New Ha Noi) newspaper that the garbage collection station was built ten years ago, causing a terrible odour and traffic chaos.

He said locals asked authorised agencies to move the station, but received no reply.

In the area near September 23 Park in District 1, three stations plague the downtown area of the city. The one on Hai Ba Trung Road has become overloaded due to the large amount of rubbish collected from Ben Nghe and Ben Thanh wards.

Pham Le Nghia, resident in Ben Nghe Ward, said garbage was collected twice a day. Tiếp tục đọc “HCM City residents plagued by overloaded dumps”

Trinh Con Son wrote, “The Great Circle of Vietnam,” which envisions people holding hands in a circle large enough to encompass his nation.

Over the weekend, news filtered out that Vietnam had lifted a days-old ban on a beloved song by Trinh Con Son, who irritated the South and infuriated the North during years of fighting.

On April 11, Vietnam’s ruling Communist government decreed that “Noi vong tay lon” (“The Great Circle of Vietnam”) could no longer be broadcast or played in public.

The decision came in response to a request from Trinh’s family, who wanted to mount a tribute on April 21 at the Huế College of Medicine and Pharmacy. Tiếp tục đọc “In Rare Reversal, Vietnam Lifts Days-old Ban on Beloved Songwriter’s Work”

Explore Vietnam’s special ancient temple

Last update 13:00 | 19/12/2016

VietNamNet Bridge – Hon Ba Temple in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau is one of the most special temples in Vietnam. It was built in 1781 to worship the Thuy Long goddess.

Hon Ba (the Lady Island), also known as “Ba Vien Dan” (three cannon rounds) or Archinard Island, is a small island in Vung Tau City. Hon Ba Temple or Lady Temple is located on the island.

The temple was built in 1881 by a follower named Ho Quang Minh. From the foot of the island to the temple runs a winding road with solid three-step at its end. In 1939, Archinard, a Frenchman officer, aimed three cannon rounds at the temple for the purpose to demolish it, but only one hit the corner of the temple. Not much damage was made. Soon after that, the officer lost his life with his own gun due to his carelessness. That is why the island is called “Three cannon rounds” or Archinard. Local people, however, call it Hon Ba.
