Globally, one in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. On March 6, The Asia Foundation in Washington, D.C., hosted a panel discussion on why gender-based violence remains so prevalent in Asia and the legal frameworks that exist (or don’t, but should) to protect women and girls. Located around 50 kilometres from the centre of Lai Chau Province, the market gathers many people from the ethnic minority groups of Mong, Ha Nhi, Dao and Thai who come from the province’s Phong Tho District.
The two-hour drive from Lai Chau City to Dao San Market allows visitors to contemplate the stunning peaceful scenes of the province. They may pass by spectacular terraced fields, romantic bridges suspended over Nam Cung Stream that lead to pretty villages or evergreen gardens of bananas and corns. Crying in the workplace can damage a woman’s career, according to Professor Kimberly Elsbach of the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis.
Looking at over a decade’s worth of data, Elsbach examined possible reasons for why women experience criticism for crying in the workplace and much of it has to do with perception. Women crying at work are often labeled emotional, weak, unprofessional and, in extreme cases, manipulative.
“For most women, crying is really not in their control,” Elsbach said. “We know that boys are socialized not to cry and don’t have to think about it when they’re adults. But most girls aren’t socialized not to cry.”
On the other hand, men who express their workplace frustration with a raised voice or other such manifestation instead of tears are perceived differently, according to Elsbach.
“So when you see Harvey Weinstein, who’s widely known to be a bully, yelling at someone, that behavior may actually give him status,” Elsbach said. Tiếp tục đọc “Workplace Crying: How is it Perceived?”

With agility and intelligence, 33-year-old Sung A Ho, a resident of Ngai Cho Village, was one of the first to offer a homestay service in the commune.
The first impression that people have of Ho is that of a friendly and frank man. Born into a poor family with eight children, he did not have the resources to go to school. He cannot read or write, but that has not stopped him from earning a stable living.
