Environmental pollution is killing more people every year than smoking, hunger or natural disasters, according to a major study released in The Lancet medical journal on Thursday.

HANOI (Reuters) – Vietnamese authorities on Monday used water cannon and electric rods to end a five-month long protest by villagers blockading a textile plant that serves global fashion brands, an official and a villager said.

The blockade represents another challenge to the communist nation’s government over industrial pollution woes, at a time when Vietnam seeks more foreign investors to keep up one of the highest rates of growth in Southeast Asia.

Hundreds of people from the northern province of Hai Duong have maintained watch in shifts day and night since April to stop work at the Pacific Crystal Textiles mill, operated by Hong Kong-based Pacific Textiles.

Locals camp out the at the factory

The locals in Dien Nam Dong Ward, Dien Ban Town have put up tents and blocked the entrance to the plant for the past three months. Old people stay out during the day and young people sleep in the tents at night. They are determined to shut down the plant in the area.

Huge mountains of coal ash are looming large in southern Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, experts said at a conference on Tuesday.

Most coal-fired electric power plants produce coal ash in the form of fly and bottom ash, left after coal is combusted.

Dân trí Theo thông tin Dân trí ghi nhận được, ông Nguyễn Xuân Quang – Phó Cục trưởng Cục Kiểm soát hoạt động bảo vệ môi trường bị mất số tiền lớn khi đang đi thanh tra 30 doanh nghiệp trên địa bàn Long An theo kế hoạch. Thời điểm bị mất tiền, ông chỉ mới thanh tra 9 doanh nghiệp.

Theo kế hoạch thanh tra các cơ sở sản xuất kinh doanh của Tổng cục Môi trường, từ ngày 21/9 – 11/10, đoàn công tác do ông Nguyễn Xuân Quang sẽ tiến hành thanh kiểm tra 30 doanh nghiệp tại Long An. Đến ngày 27/9, đoàn đã kiểm tra được 9 doanh nghiệp tại huyện Đức Hoà.

Cùng với đoàn của Bộ Tài nguyên và Môi trường, nhiều cơ quan chức năng tại Long An cũng tháp tùng đoàn đến từng doanh nghiệp. Đây là kế hoạch kiểm tra công khai do Bộ Tài Nguyên và Môi trường chỉ đạo và sẽ có kết luận thanh tra sau 45 ngày.

Theo thông tin từ các cơ quan ban ngành tỉnh Long An, những doanh nghiệp nằm trong danh sách bị thanh tra đợt này có dấu hiệu vi phạm về vệ sinh môi trường.
