A growing chorus of Chinese human rights lawyers and activists are calling for Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist Liu Xiaobo’s unconditional release after he was granted medical parole to undergo treatment for late-stage liver cancer.

The US also added its voice on Tuesday urging China to give Liu and his wife, Liu Xia, freedom to move and choose his own doctors.

A place called ‘hope’: the tiny island on the frontline of US-China tensions

More than 100 Filipinos live 15 miles from one of Beijing’s most ambitious island bases in the South China Sea

On the horizon, the azure sea water stops and the white, concrete structures of the Chinese military base rise up.

“Sometimes we get nervous because we are only civilians. If they invade the island, they can harm us. They can do whatever they want,” says Romeo Malaguit, a fisherman and father of two, who lives on the nearby Philippine-claimed island Thitu.

Locally known as Pag-asa, meaning hope in Tagalog, Thitu is a tree-studded settlement no more than 1.5km long and 800 metres wide. A dilapidated runway takes up almost half the area. Tiếp tục đọc “A place called ‘hope’: the tiny island on the frontline of US-China tensions”

In China’s far west the ‘perfect police state’ is emerging

It was Friday, the Islamic day of assembly, but outside Kashgar’s Id Kah mosque on Liberation Avenue it was the growl of diesel engines that filled the air not a muezzin’s wistful cry.

One by one armoured personnel carriers, some with machine guns poking from their turrets, rolled towards People’s Square where a 12-metre statue of Mao Zedong was preparing to preside over the latest in a series of tub-thumping “anti-terror” rallies to be held here in the heartlands of China’s Muslim Uighur minority this year. China to introduce national standard for English translations in attempt to rid country of Chinglish

chinglish_signs17.jpg

Tired of getting laughed at by visitors for its hilariously bad English translations, China is planning to institute a set of fun-killing national guidelines aimed at wiping out the scourge of Chinglish once and for all.

chinglish_signs14.jpg

This new English translation standard will go into effect on December 1st, 2017 — a dark day in the 5,000 years of Chinese history — in order to improve the quality of English translations in 13 different public arenas like transportation, entertainment and medicine. Additionally, it will provide a list of standardized translations for some 3,500 commonly used phrases and terms.

Tổng Bí thư Nguyễn Phú Trọng tiếp Thượng tướng Phạm Trường Long tại Hà Nội hôm 18/06/2017

YULIN: A notorious Chinese dog meat festival opened on Wednesday (Jun 21) with sellers torching the hair off carcasses, butchers chopping slabs of canines and cooks frying up dishes, dispelling rumours that authorities would ban sales this year.

After earlier reports of a sales ban at the summer solstice event in the southern city of Yulin, animal rights groups said vendors and officials reached a compromise and set a limit of two dogs on display per stall.

But multiple carcasses rested on several stalls at two markets, with stiff pointy tails, leathery yellow skin, eyes shut and bared teeth as if in a final growl.

https://cvdvn.net/2017/06/20/thayer-background-briefing-vietnam-exxon-mobil-sign-agreements-to-develop-vietnams-largest-gas-project/

Can’t Imagine Tillerson Being in Putin’s Pocket: Nye

President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for top U.S. diplomat comes with Chinese geopolitical entanglements. In his favor is years of dealing with some of the country’s biggest oil companies.

As chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corp. since 2006, Rex Tillerson has seen his company snared in territorial disputes in the South China Sea. An exploration venture with Vietnam has brought it into the cross hairs of China, one of the countries claiming the disputed waters. This article is part 3 of a series on peak oil in the South China Sea.

Bloomberg commented on 15/12/2016 that “Trump’s Top Diplomat Would Bring Complex History With China From Exxon Days”

Exxon’s work is focused on a field in undisputed territory about 80 kilometers (50 miles) offshore from central Vietnam, spokesman Aaron Stryk said in response to e-mailed questions. He declined to comment on reports China warned Exxon against exploring in disputed areas.

“Border issues are a matter for governments to address through appropriate channels,” Stryk said. “We have a successful history of working with various governments and partners around the world to maximize the value of hydrocarbon resources.”
