The Misnomer of the South China Sea

WSJ

The name is a recent phenomenon that conveys a false sense of ownership.

In a challenge to China’s claim to almost the entire so-called South China Sea, Indonesia announced last week that it will designate the waters off its northern coast, around the Natuna and Anambas islands, as the “Natuna Sea.” This is more than just petty nationalism. It’s a helpful marker that the term “South China Sea” is a recent invention with no basis in history. Tiếp tục đọc “The Misnomer of the South China Sea”

Long Tan commemoration cancelled, then rescheduled with modifications agreed upon by Vietnamese and Australian PMs

For Aussies and New Zealanders, the Battle of Long Tan is the highlight of their wartime experience in Viet Nam, a singular event in which an outnumbered force of ANZAC infantry and artillery held off more than 1500 Viet Cong, inflicting serious casualties while suffering relatively few casualties of their own. Over the years, Vietnamese authorities have quietly permitted groups of Australian and New Zealand veterans to return on special occasions to commemorate the battle at the site near the beach resort town of Vung Tau. This year, the event threatened to balloon out of proportion and the Vietnamese cancelled their authorization at the last minute, later amending the decision to permit a much smaller event as had been the practice in the past. The situation has stirred considerable comment, not unlike the controversy surrounding the appointment of former Sen. Bob Kerrey to be Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the new Fulbright University Vietnam. Kerrey, who eventually admitted his role as a U.S. Navy Seal in the killing of more than a dozen Vietnamese women, children, and old men in a nighttime raid intended to wipe out suspected Viet Cong, has said he does not intend to step down from his appointment despite the controversy. Invasive lionfish now on Whole Foods menu – sans poisonous spines

CNN

Lionfish with their distinctive venomous spines are an invasive species that has thrived in U.S. coastal waters because they have no natural predators — until now.

Whole Foods stores in Florida are selling the “white, buttery meat” of the fish, which the grocery chain says is suitable for ceviche or a “simple pan sauté.”

Mr. K had never imagined it would be this bad. After leading a three-year undercover investigation of sea turtle smuggling in Vietnam, his home country, those efforts had finally yielded tips from informants, landing him on the doorstep of three warehouses in a rural area outside Nha Trang, a beach town in Khanh Hoa Province, about 250 miles northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The Specter of an Accidental China-U. S. War

As China flexes its muscles in the South China Sea, the risks of an inadvertent clash with the U.S. are growing

A recent think-tank report says that America must “expand communications with China in times of peace, crisis, and war.” Above, a Chinese military band plays as a U.S. destroyer arrives on Aug. 8 at the port of Qingdao, in eastern China, on a scheduled visit.

SHANGHAI—The last time America and China went to war—in Korea in 1950—they fought each other to a standstill.

Later that decade, as the Cold War ramped up, they came close to blows again; the Eisenhower administration repeatedly threatened “Red China” with nuclear devastation as tensions bubbled over Taiwan. Tiếp tục đọc “The Specter of an Accidental China-U. S. War”

Among the issues that gained applause were efforts to secure the nation’s sovereignty. Tiếp tục đọc “Jokowi talks up sovereignty in speech”

China and Russia concerned over America’s anti-missile moves

While the aftershocks of an international arbitration ruling against its South China Sea territorial claims are still being felt across East Asia, Beijing must now grapple with the prospect of an apparent “trilateralization” of defense mechanisms between Washington, Tokyo and Seoul in the region. Moscow finds itself in a more delicate position than Beijing since US anti-missile network covers its western and eastern territories.
China and Russia find themselves in the same boat while opposing the United States’ recent efforts to advance its missile defense complex along both flanks of Eurasia. Some already envisage a possible cooperation between Beijing and Moscow to counter what many Russian analysts have dubbed Washington’s “double containment” from the Euro-Russian border to the East China Sea.

However, as it is hard not to see a single thread connecting the US and US-related defense shields in the Western Pacific and Eastern Europe, in particular regarding their industrial development, it is not a foregone conclusion that the Chinese communist leadership and the Kremlin will manage to coordinate a common response to Washington’s anti-missile challenge.
