For the first time, the U.S. government is subsidizing companies to hold on to their workers. However, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that Congress passed to fight unemployment in the coronavirus economic crisis is having trouble delivering benefits. Its first round of funds was quickly exhausted.

How Blood Sugar Can Trigger a Deadly Immune Response in the Flu and Possibly COVID-19

Glucose metabolism plays a key role in the cytokine storm seen in influenza, and the link could have potential implications for novel coronavirus infections

How Blood Sugar Can Trigger a Deadly Immune Response in the Flu and Possibly COVID-19
Influenza and COVID-19 infections can trigger an out-of-control immune response involving molecules called cytokines. An illustration of interleukin-4, a cytokine involved in allergic response, is shown here. Credit: Juan Gaertner Getty Images

Many of the people dying in the novel coronavirus pandemic appear to be harmed more by their own immune system than by the virus itself. The infection can trigger a cytokine storm—a surge in cell-signaling proteins that prompt inflammation—that hits the lungs, attacking tissues and potentially resulting in organ failure and death. But this phenomenon is not unique to COVID-19; it sometimes occurs in severe influenza, too. Now a study sheds light on one of the metabolic mechanisms that help orchestrate such runaway inflammation.

LINKOPING, Sweden — In a cavernous room filled with garbage, a giant mechanical claw reaches down and grabs five tons of trash. As a technician in a control room maneuvers the spiderlike crane, the claw drops its moldering harvest down a 10-story shaft into a boiler that is hotter than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. A fetid odor emanates from plastic trash bags discarded by hundreds of thousands of homes.

The person who established the restaurant is Nguyen Van Tung, born in 1913 in Tra Vinh Province. He built the shop with his saved up money and named Nhan Huong after his deceased wife. Saigon Zoo was chosen as where to build the restaurant because it was a crowded place, creating a perfect hideout for officials as they could go in and out easily with drawing much suspicion. In addition, the shop is also conveniently located near the enemy headquarters.

The great salt drought desiccating Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

Farmers suffer huge losses and communities struggle amid high levels of seawater intruding into the freshwater delta.

by

Danang, Vietnam – “Well I can tell you, all my fish are dead now.”

Nguyen Thi Bach Vien sounds more resigned than anything else. She is calling from her home in Ben Tre province, a few hours drive south of Ho Chi Minh City in the belly of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, where she has a fish farm and gardens of coconut and pomelo trees.

Vien’s freshwater shrimps and giant river prawns are dying, too.

The 62-year-old has spent her whole life on her land, watching the soil gradually change and the air grow more sweltering every year. Now she fears that she and her husband are likely to be the last of their family to work solely on the farm.

“Dead fish and dead shrimps,” Vien says, “and if we don’t have a solution soon, I think, dead farmers too.”

The issue is water. Salty seawater has intruded into the freshwater Mekong Delta at unprecedented levels this year, to the point at which peoples’ crops and produce simply cannot survive.

World Bank Predicts Sharpest Decline of Remittances in Recent History

worldbank.org

WASHINGTON, April 22, 2020 — Global remittances are projected to decline sharply by about 20 percent in 2020 due to the economic crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown. The projected fall, which would be the sharpest decline in recent history, is largely due to a fall in the wages and employment of migrant workers, who tend to be more vulnerable to loss of employment and wages during an economic crisis in a host country. Remittances to low and middle-income countries (LMICs) are projected to fall by 19.7 percent to $445 billion, representing a loss of a crucial financing lifeline for many vulnerable households.
