Vietnam among six nations worst hit by climate change in 20 years

Vietnam is one of six countries most affected by climate change between 1999 and 2018, according to survey results released this week.

The Global Climate Risk Index, published by the German environmental think tank Germanwatch, ranked Vietnam sixth among countries hit hardest by extreme weather events in that period, with its Climate Risk Index (CRI) at 29.83.

Puerto Rico, Myanmar, Haiti, the Philippines and Pakistan are adjudged the worst affected nations with the lowest CRI scores.

Vietnam textile industry orders hit by African competition

Vietnamese textile manufacturers are seeing orders decline with buyers moving to others, cheaper developing countries.

Normally, by the end of a year they would have enough orders for the whole of the following year, Nguyen Van Thoi, chairman of TNG Investment and Trading JSC, which makes garments, said.

But this year many businesses have said they do not have enough orders for 2020, with some reporting a 20 percent drop in orders from last year. Besides, many have not signed long-term contracts for products, only monthly or quarterly, he said.

A Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) official, who wished not to be named, said many orders have shifted to emerging countries in Africa, while competition with textiles superpowers like China, India and Bangladesh is becoming increasingly fierce.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States changed its mind and is now refusing to sign a letter that would have authorized the U.N. Security Council to hold a meeting on the human rights situation in North Korea, diplomats said Monday.

Without support from the United States, European and other countries that wanted the U.N.’s most powerful body to discuss human rights in North Korea can’t go ahead Tuesday because they are now one vote short of the minimum nine “yes” votes required, the diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because discussions were private.

Giáo viên đang tìm kiếm phương pháp đào tạo mới để hiểu về khoa học não bộ liên quan đến hội chứng khó đọc (dyslexia), một khuyết tật được cho là phổ biến nhất ở trẻ em.

>Trong 17 năm là giáo viên các môn xã hội ở trường trung học cơ sở tại Nashville, Tennessee, Su Williams hay gặp những học sinh có khó khăn trong việc đọc ở trình độ cơ bản, và những kiến thức mà cô học được trong trường sư phạm và kinh nghiệm giảng dạy trong gần 2 thập kỷ không giúp được gì cho cô.

Cô nói “Tôi học được từ những lớp học của tôi đó là những gì tôi đã được đào tạo – Toàn bộ Ngôn ngữ và phương pháp tập đọc cân bằng – không hề có tác dụng (với trẻ mắc chứng khó đọc). Điều đó đã thức tỉnh tôi”. Không có thời gian để dạy học sinh lớp năm cách đọc lưu loát  hoặc hiểu thấu đáo về cơ chế sinh học cách thức trẻ em học đọc, Williams tiếp tục tập trung vào môn học mà cô phải dạy trong 1 năm học, hy vọng việc đọc của bọn trẻ sẽ dần dần được cải thiện.

Low coffee prices upset farmers in spite of bumper crop

At this time, coffee farmers in Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai and Dak Nong provinces are entering harvest season. However, despite of a bumper crop, farmers are unhappy as the price of coffee is extremely low, causing them to be unable to cover investment and caring costs and the risk of a shortage of capital for next crop.

The Hanoitimes – Vietnam agrees to purchase 1,200 megawatts of electricity from Laos in 2020, exceeding the original plan of 1,000 megawatts, and 5,000 megawatts until 2030.

Startups in Vietnam have great potential to grow, however, the community also faces a number of challenges. Most local startups are small in scale, at seed stage, have limited ability to make a breakthrough, and are in need of further incubation. Some of the prominent challenges currently faced by startups in Vietnam are:

Ability to access finance: In 2016, the major financial sources of domestic investors came from three major venture capital firms: IDG Ventures Vietnam, Cyber Agent, and DFJ VinaCapital. Altogether, they invested over US$120 million in funding and consulting for several brands.

However, it is hard to convince local investors to take risks and invest in early-stage startups. More often than not, those startups have to bootstrap at the beginning.   • This year, the first floating solar power generating system in Southeast Asia was deployed on a reservoir in Vietnam.
  • Floating solar power systems are being written into the energy master plans of Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines as well as Vietnam, and into the calculations of investment banks.
  • The technology presents an alternative to additional hydroelectric power projects.

For two decades or more, alarms have been sounding for the Mekong Delta. It’s being hammered by climate change, by a proliferation of upstream dams, by unsustainable and inappropriate farming practices, by greed and political expediency. The punishment the delta’s taking has been well reported, first in scholarly papers, then in specialized publications and appeals by NGOs.

Now there’s a consensus: an environmental disaster is inexorably unfolding over 75,000 square kilometers (29,000 square miles) of famously fertile lowlands in Vietnam and Cambodia, home to some 35 million farmers and fishermen. Major media are publishing melancholy obituaries for the Mekong that once was.

Solar farm is good for biodiversity

Ground-mounted PV systems promote biodiversity according to a new study published in Germany. Scientists collected data from 75 MW of solar plants nationwide and found the areas they were located in showed greater diversity and more intact habitat structures and found panels provide a refuge for animals.
