KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian authorities have seized about US$3.1 million (£2.5 million) worth of rhinoceros horns flown in from Mozambique via Qatar, the latest seizure in Asia of products from endangered species to feed demand for traditional remedies, officials said on Monday.

HÀ NỘI — The country’s wild bear population has declined sharply over the past 20 years, according to recent surveys carried out in 22 protected areas.

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit has uncovered evidence that Vietnam is still a major market for illegal wildlife products, despite Hanoi’s stated commitment that it is tackling the issue.

The investigation comes a few days before the Southeast Asian nation hosts an international conference on stopping the illicit trade.

On Saturday, Vietnamese authorities in the capital ground down and burned two tonnes of ivory and 70kg of rhino – all seized from smugglers –  in a symbolic move designed to show the government’s commitment to thwarting wildlife crime. A Japanese whaling fleet returned to port on Friday after an annual Antarctic hunt that killed more than 300 of the mammals, as Tokyo pursues the programme in defiance of global criticism.

The fleet set sail for the Southern Ocean in November, with plans to slaughter 333 minke whales, flouting a worldwide moratorium and opposition led by Australia and New Zealand.

The fleet consisted of five ships, three of which arrived on Friday morning at Shimonoseki port in western Japan, the country’s Fisheries Agency said.

More than 200 people, including crew members and their families, gathered in the rain for a 30-minute ceremony in front of the Nisshin Maru, the fleet’s main ship, according to an official of the Shimonoseki city government. BÌNH THUẬN — The southern central province of Bình Thuận has issued a temporary ban on the exploitation of molluscs and bivalves across its sea waters as part of an effort to protect and regenerate dwindling marine resources.

The critically endangered Indochinese tiger has been found to be breeding in a Thai jungle, providing hope for a subspecies whose total population may number only a couple of hundred.

Conservation authorities in Thailand, along with two international wildlife organisations, released photographs of new tiger cubs in the country’s east.

Walls along several streets of District 1, Ho Chi Minh City have been given a touch-up with graffiti and mural paintings featuring rhinos, as part of a campaign to protect the endangered animal.

The campaign, named Rhinos Street Art Painting Project, is run by the Center of Hands-on Actions and Networking for Growth and Environment (CHANGE) and is backed by the local Youth Union and WildAct Vietnam, a non-government conservation charity.

Viet Nam News ĐỒNG NAI — Wild elephant habitats in the southern province of  Đồng Nai are being reduced and degraded, leading to a lack of food and more conflicts between animals and humans, according to local authorities.

Experts say the elephant requires a vast habitat but its living space has been shrunk due to human encroachment into the forest. Sau 3 ngày kể từ khi bị người dân phát hiện một phần bán đảo Sơn Trà (Đà Nẵng) bị cày ủi gần như thành đồi trọc để xây dựng biệt thự, khu nghĩ dưỡng, dự án sinh thái Biển Tiên Sa đã bị đình chỉ hoạt động. Thế nhưng, với nhiều người dân Đà Nẵng và các chuyên gia môi trường, họ mong muốn chính quyền địa phương có những quyết định mạnh mẽ hơn bởi sự xâm hại vào bán đảo Sơn Trà đang ngày càng nghiêm trọng và táo tợn.

HANOI: Vietnam police seized more than 100 kilogrammes of rhino horn smuggled into the country in suitcases from Kenya on Tuesday (Mar 14), the latest illegal haul in the wildlife trafficking hub.

Vietnam is a hot market for rhino horn, believed to have medicinal properties and is in high demand among the communist nation’s growing middle class.

Trong văn hóa Việt Nam, sam là biểu tượng của vợ chồng chung thủy, dùng thường xuyên để giáo dục đạo vợ chồng. Nhưng biểu tượng này có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng vì ngày nay người ta rầm rộ quảng cáo “đặc sản sam”, “món ăn không thể bỏ qua”, “tuyệt vời gỏi trứng sam” trong các nhà hàng.

Sam (tên khoa học Tachypleus tridentatus), đôi khi được gọi là sam biển, thường sống ở các cửa biển và các khúc sông gần cửa biển, luôn đi đôi một cặp vợ chồng. Sam cái lớn hơn sam đực, đi trước. Sam đực theo sau, bám chặt vào sam cái. Nếu người ta bắt sam thì luôn luôn bắt hai con bám nhau như thế.
