Addressing the 10th Moscow Conference on International Security on August 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that his war on Ukraine does not violate the U.N. Charter and was launched to protect the residents of Ukraine’s Donbas region from “genocide.”

“We have taken the decision to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine, a decision which is in full conformity with the Charter of the United Nations. It has been clearly spelled out that the aims of this operation are to ensure the security of Russia and its citizens and protect the residents of Donbas from genocide,” he said.

That statement is false.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine violated not only the U.N. Charter but also international law and even Russian law. Moreover, under international criminal law, the invasion is viewed as a crime of aggression.

In view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Latvia issued a decree that all objects glorifying totalitarian regimes must be destroyed by November 15. This included the Soviet victory monument erected in 1985.

A concrete obelisk topped with Soviet stars, which was the centerpiece of a monument commemorating the Red Army’s victory over Nazi Germany, was demolished in Latvia’s capital, Riga, on Thursday.

Two diggers with pneumatic hammers brought the 79-meter (261-foot) obelisk down to the applause of numerous onlookers. A number of large-scale bronze statues had already been removed from the monument in the preceding days.

Việt Nam có khoảng 500 doanh nghiệp xuất khẩu lao động được cấp phép hoạt động, bình quân mỗi năm các doanh nghiệp này đưa hơn 102.000 NLĐ Việt đi làm việc nước ngoài.

Với sứ mệnh xây dựng môi trường trong sạch, đảm bảo quyền lợi cho NLĐ Việt đã, đang và sẽ sang Nhật học tập, làm việc cũng như đóng vai trò là cầu nối việc làm giữa doanh nghiệp Nhật và NLĐ Việt, dự án IEVJ hoạt động theo nguyên tắc phi lợi nhuận được thành lập bởi chính những người Nhật đang sinh sống và làm việc tại Việt Nam. Kinh phí cho dự án được đóng góp từ chính các thành viên sáng lập.

Cô ngồi một mình, áo hở rốn, coi dáng rất cô đơn tại quầy rượu mênh mông của khách sạn Atrium ở Praha. Lúc đó đã gần 2 giờ sáng, và hở rốn là vì cô mặc quốc phục sari của Bangladesh. Cô nhìn tôi và tôi đã định lại gần kéo ghế bên cạnh. “Khuya rồi, yên ắng nhỉ, bạn có thấy không, mọi thứ như là chùng hẳn xuống và 2 người mình vàng vọt như trong một bức tranh của Edward Hopper…”, tôi định nói.

Nhưng nào chỉ có 2 người mà là 3, và người thứ 3 cũng ngồi nhìn tôi là anh công an bảo vệ Taslima Nasreen làm tôi mất cả hứng. Năm đó, tại Hội nghị quốc tế Văn bút, nữ nhà văn này vì từ đạo Hồi và viết lách sao đó chống đối nên tính mạng bị đe dọa, và cũng như Salman Rushdie, bị một giáo sĩ treo án tử hình. Nhờ vậy nên mấy ngày trước tôi thấy cô đi xe BMW chống đạn đến đại hội, lúc nào cũng có một anh mặc đồ vest đi theo sau dáo dác. Tình hình rất là chán, tôi quyết định chỉ ủng hộ quyền tự do phát biểu và sáng tác của cô từ xa. Tôi gật đầu chào cô rồi đi ra khỏi khách sạn.

Những đụng độ văn chương, tôn giáo, tự do ngôn luận (và tự do sau ngôn luận) không bắt đầu hay kết thúc ở Salman Rushdie, nhưng với thế giới, nhất là phương Tây, thì văn sĩ 75 tuổi này lại trở thành bộ mặt cho cuộc tranh luận đó.

Author Salman Rushdie is in the hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed by a man at an arts festival in New York State on Aug. 12, 2022. The following article was published on the 30th anniversary of the release of The Satanic Verses.

One of the most controversial books in recent literary history, Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses,” was published three decades ago this month and almost immediately set off angry demonstrations all over the world, some of them violent.

A year later, in 1989, Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa, or religious ruling, ordering Muslims to kill the author. Born in India to a Muslim family, but by then a British citizen living in the U.K., Rushdie was forced to go into protective hiding for the greater part of a decade.

The controversy

The book, “Satanic Verses,” goes to the heart of Muslim religious beliefs when Rushdie, in dream sequences, challenges and sometimes seems to mock some of its most sensitive tenets.

Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammed was visited by the angel Gibreel – Gabriel in English – who, over a 22 year period, recited God’s words to him. In turn, Muhammed repeated the words to his followers. These words were eventually written down and became the verses and chapters of the Quran.

Cuộc thi sắc đẹp không phải là nguyên nhân mà chỉ là một dấu hiệu nhắc chúng ta rằng, xã hội vẫn còn nặng nề phán xét và coi trọng người phụ nữ qua vẻ bề ngoài.

Việt Nam tổ chức hơn 30 cuộc thi sắc đẹp quốc gia, chưa kể các cuộc thi cấp địa phương. Chúng ta ngạc nhiên vì đó là một con số lớn. Nhưng điều ta ngạc nhiên hơn cả, đó là tại sao sau bao nhiêu năm người ta công kích các cuộc thi sắc đẹp, sau một loạt những thay đổi quan niệm về vẻ đẹp đa dạng đang diễn ra ở khắp mọi nơi, giữa thời điểm phong trào nữ quyền đang dâng cao mạnh mẽ, trong đời sống hằng ngày, chỉ riêng việc đánh giá sắc đẹp của người khác đã khó chấp nhận; Thế mà, các cuộc thi sắc đẹp không chỉ vẫn còn “hợp thời”, phổ biến mà còn đang nở rộ, ngày một tăng về số lượng.

On the morning of January 31, in a house surrounded by a peach garden in Ta De village in the northern Son La Province’s Van Ho District, the 14-year-old looked in the mirror, combed her long hair, put on lipstick, and then ventured out.

That day her cousin on the other side of the village was getting married, and Mai and a friend put on their best clothes and headed to the wedding.

While they were on the way they were stopped by seven young men on three motorcycles. The tallest person flirted with Mai and said: “You look stunning today. Want to go to Hang Kia Commune and hang with us?”

The friend sitting behind her was terrified and clinging to Mai’s shirt. Both of them stayed silent.

One of the motorbikes sped up and blocked the road, causing Mai and her friend to fall off their motorbike.
