VietNamNet Bridge – On January 10, 2017, for the first time in Vietnam’s physics history, an article about nuclear physics by Vietnamese authors was published in an international scientific journal.

The article titled “Simultaneous microscopic description of nuclear level densities and radiative strength functions” was published in Physical Review Letters 118, 022502 (2017). It was the work of a team of Vietnamese scientists: Nguyen Quang Hung from Duy Tan University, Da Nang City, Vietnam, Nguyen Dinh Dang from RIKEN, Wako, Japan and Le Thi Quynh Huong from Khanh Hoa University, Nha Trang City, Vietnam.

VietNamNet Bridge – Universities are focusing on enrolling students in majors which are easy to teach and learn and do not require high investments in facilities and laboratories.

Education experts said they see problems in the structure and scale of majors. Most schools have become multidisciplinary, and therefore, are compared to ‘supermarkets’ where there are only ‘salable goods’.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), the majors related to business and management are favored most by schools. There are 403 such majors.

Less favorite are education & training (363), humanity (280), technology (232), computing & information technology (150). Meanwhile, there are only 116 majors related to agriculture, forestry and aquaculture, 47 production & processing, social services (16) and transport services (12). VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam has vowed to improve students’ English skills by pouring trillions of dong into English teaching programs, but the majority of university graduates cannot communicate in English.

The high percentage of students lacking basic and professional English skills is one of the biggest problems of Vietnam’s university education.

A survey conducted of 18 universities in Vietnam found that first-year students can get 220-245 score out of 990 TOEIC scores. This means that students would need 360 teaching hours more, or 480 periods to obtain 450-500 TOEIC score, the minimum score candidates need to be shortlisted by employers. Yvonne van Amerongen is Head of Quality and Innovation at Hogewey, and one of the founders of its internationally award-winning small-scale living model of care.

Yvonne has been working at Vivium Zorggroep since 1983, in particular at nursing home Hogewey. In 1990, she developed a new product which revolutionised care for people developing dementia in the vicinity of the Hogewey nursing home. In 1993, Yvonne became a fulltime project manager for the development of the care project small-scale living with lifestyle for the psycho-geriatrics target group.This project was also the subject matter of her graduation thesis for the Higher Vocational Training in Social Pedagogic Care with a specialisation in Management. Since 1996 Yvonne has been a staff executive for Quality & Innovation for Vivium Zorggroep in Weesp.

Hogewey is located in Weesp, a town outside Amsterdam. Since it opened in 2009, Hogewey has attracted a huge amount of interest from all over Europe, with a centre based on its design currently being built in Switzerland.
