Vietnam at regional bottom in global economic freedom ranking

Vietnam takes the bottom position in the region in the newest Index of Economic Freedom just announced by the U.S.-based Heritage Foundation, which uses data from global institutions like the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund to compile the rankings.

According to the 2018 report released last Friday, Vietnam ranks 141st in the 2018 Index although the country’s economic freedom score does inch up by 0.7 point to 53.1. Vietnam fears effects of US tax bill on foreign investment

Tax reform passed by the US Congress at the end of last year may affect Vietnam’s economy as US investors are likely to send their investment back home, where the corporate income tax (CIT) rate has been slashed, Vietnamese economic experts have warned.

The sweeping tax reforms, signed into law by President Donald Trump on December 22, include reductions in the CIT rate from 35 per cent to 21 per cent and a minimum of 10.5 per cent rate on any foreign profits US companies send home.

The tax overhaul should encourage corporations to relocate or build new operations in the US instead of overseas, where the CIT rate is often lower.

For anyone who has spent time in the Philippines, you can probably relate to the frustration over the country’s poor road and transportation infrastructure. Whether in metro Manila, where an average commuter spends more than an hour stuck in traffic jams or about three hours commuting to and from work, or in the countryside, where paved roads end abruptly leaving a bumpy, grueling drive ahead, the infrastructure problem is omnipresent.

In the World Economic Forum’s latest Global Competitiveness Index, the Philippines ranked 56th out of 137 countries. Despite moving up a notch from the previous year, the country still fell behind six of its ASEAN neighbors. One of the biggest impediments is a lack of investment in infrastructure: the index puts the Philippines 90th in terms of infrastructure ranking and warns that this is significantly undermining the country’s ability to compete globally. The Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2003, covered 85,754 hectares. With this extension, the site covers a total surface area of 126,236 hectares (a 46 % increase) and shares a boundary with the Hin Namno Nature Reserve in the Peoples Democratic Republic of Laos. The Park’s landscape is formed by limestone plateaux and tropical forests. It features great geological diversity and offers spectacular phenomena, including a large number of caves and underground rivers. The site harbours a high level of biodiversity and many endemic species. The extension ensures a more coherent ecosystem while providing additional protection to the catchment areas that are of vital importance for the integrity of limestone landscapes.

Người dân xã Đồng Tâm lại một lần nữa gửi thư ngỏ cầu cứu đến Trung ương Đảng, Chính phủ và Quốc hội. Trong thư ngỏ mới nhất đề ngày 20/01/2018 vừa qua, họ khẩn cầu: “Mười nghìn người dân xã Đồng Tâm tha thiết thỉnh cầu đến các Ông bà Đảng và Nhà nước cử những người có tâm huyết, có chuẩn mực đạo đức, biết thương dân về xã chúng tôi để nghe tâm tư nguyện vọng, nghe tiếng kêu cứu, nức nở, ai oán, u sầu… của người dân! Đừng để người dân thấp cổ bé họng chúng tôi kêu không thấu tới trời thì oan ức quá!”. Trong thư ngỏ này, người dân xã Đồng Tâm thể hiện mong muốn là vụ việc và nỗi oan ức, bất công của họ được giải quyết sao cho thấu tình, trọn nghĩa! Một động thái chính trị rất khôn ngoan, mở đầu bức Thư ngỏ này, thêm một lần họ tái khẳng định: “Nhân dân xã Đồng Tâm chúng tôi xin khẳng định rằng chúng tôi không chống lại Đảng, không lật đổ chính quyền! Chúng tôi chỉ căm thù và chống lại bọn tham nhũng vì chúng là giặc nội xâm; bọn chúng đã lợi dụng quyền lực để cướp đất của người dân hun đúc lợi ích khủng để hình thành những nhóm lợi ích!”.

      Four years ago, some manufacturers worried that they would run up against a shortage of rare-earth elements, which are used to make wind turbines, certain light bulbs, computers, and many other high-tech products. Rare earths actually aren’t rare, but they are found in low concentrations, attached to minerals from which they must be separated. And most of the facilities designed to mine and separate rare earths are based in China, which limited exports of these materials in 2009 and 2010 (see

Summary :The use of renewables like the sun and wind can cause fluctuations in power grids. But what impact do these fluctuations have on security of supply? To answer this question, scientists analyzed different types of fluctuations in several power grids in Europe, Japan, and the USA — and came to surprising conclusions.

Frequency measurements from 2015 (data: 50Hertz): the power grid frequency fluctuates around 50 Hz in the European grid and exhibits large jumps particularly in the trading intervals of 15 minutes. Usually, the grid frequency is within the yellow area but upward and downward deviations (grey) are particularly likely every 15 minutes.

Our power grid works at a frequency of 50 hertz — usually generated by turbines, for example in hydro- or coal power plants, which rotate at a speed of 50 revolutions per second. “When a consumer uses more electrical energy from the power grid, the grid frequency drops slightly before an increased energy feed-in re-establishes the original frequency,” explains Benjamin Schaefer from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPIDS) in Goettingen and lead author of the study. “Deviations from the nominal value of 50 hertz must be kept to a minimum, as otherwise sensitive electrical devices could be damaged.”

GDP growth benefits for the poor lessening: economist

Sáng 15/1, Thủ tướng Nguyễn Xuân Phúc đã ký ban hành Nghị định để cắt giảm 675 điều kiện đầu tư kinh doanh, tương đương 55% trong tổng số 1.216 điều kiện đầu tư kinh doanh mà Bộ Công Thương quản lý.

Thông tin được Thủ tướng Nguyễn Xuân Phúc cho biết tại Hội nghị tổng kết công tác năm 2017 và triển khai nhiệm vụ năm 2018 ngành Công Thương, sáng 15/1.

Đánh giá cao những nỗ lực và kết quả của ngành Công Thương, Thủ tướng chỉ rõ: Ngành Công Thương biết gạt bỏ những lợi ích cục bộ, vượt lên chính mình, đồng thời cũng là Bộ tiên phong đi đầu trong việc cắt bỏ các thủ tục hành chính, mà việc đề xuất cắt giảm, đơn giản hóa các điều kiện kinh doanh là một ví dụ.
