Caramel pudding (Hang Than Street): There are about three or four shops selling homemade caramel pudding and yogurt close to the corner of Hang Than and Hoe Nhai. It’s easier for takeout but if you don’t mind a bit squeezing, you are welcome to sit down. They are master at mixing yogurt and caramel pudding with fruits, nep cam (violet glutinous rice) and all kinds of yummy jelly.

Vietnam sees record hike in international visitors

VietNamNet Bridge – The country has seen an estimated 6.2 million international visitors in the first half of this year, up 30.2 per cent year-on-year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported.

Foreigners travel around Hoi An Ancient Town in the central province of Quang Nam by Xich lo (cyclos). 

In June alone, around 950,000 foreign tourists visited Viet Nam, 33.6 per cent higher than the same period last year, according to the GSO data.

China to introduce national standard for English translations in attempt to rid country of Chinglish

Tired of getting laughed at by visitors for its hilariously bad English translations, China is planning to institute a set of fun-killing national guidelines aimed at wiping out the scourge of Chinglish once and for all.

This new English translation standard will go into effect on December 1st, 2017 — a dark day in the 5,000 years of Chinese history — in order to improve the quality of English translations in 13 different public arenas like transportation, entertainment and medicine. Additionally, it will provide a list of standardized translations for some 3,500 commonly used phrases and terms.

Students seek luck before exam at Temple of Literature

Students often visit Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam, or Temple of Literature, in the days running up to their annual exams to pray for luck.

Many students are flocking to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, before their high school graduation exams which are scheduled to take place from June 22 to 24.

The temple, the main Confucian school in feudal times, was built in 1070 in the time of Emperor Ly Nhan Tong. It includes various pavilions, halls, statues and steles and is still venerated as place of respect. Modern students still indulge in this tradition.

Red Dao wedding ceremony

The Red Dao ethnic community in the northern province of Lao Cai has a rich culture. Their wedding ceremony is among these cultural features.

A Dan Tri reporter recently attended the wedding ceremony of bride Tan U May and groom Tan A Hin in Pho Village, Ban Quam Commune. The event lasted for two days with most of the activities held at the groom’s family.
