HA NOI – Most Vietnamese cities lack the capacity to confront climate change challenges, experts say, calling for greater preparedness efforts.

Cities have to be ready to adapt to new situations and unexpected developments, ensuring essential services to residents at all times, they add.

SYDNEY: Coral bleached for two consecutive years at Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has “zero prospect” of recovery, scientists warned on Monday (Apr 10), as they confirmed the site has again been hit by warming sea temperatures.

Researchers said last month they were detecting another round of mass bleaching this year after a severe event in 2016, and their fears were confirmed after aerial surveys of the entire 2,300km long bio-diverse reef.

BÌNH THUẬN — Extreme weather conditions resulting in a complex tide phenomenon, landslides and sea erosion are threatening coastal areas in central Bình Thuận Province, authority officials and local people have said.
Mai Kiều, director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this week that landslides and erosion constantly hitting the province’s 10km coastline over the past 10 years had caused extensive damage to local life.
Tuy Phong District was the hardest hit area, with hundreds of households in the communes and townships, including La Gi, Tân Phước, Vĩnh Tân and Tiến Thành, faced with the high possibility of having to flee their homes.
Landslides and erosion have been increasingly impacting agricultural production; infrastructure, including roads and sea dykes; and particularly many protective forests.
The sea has completely destroyed over 450m of sea dykes and damaged nearly 300 houses and dozens of hectares of forest in the two areas of La Gi and Tân Phước alone, according to Kiều.
Last month, sea tides and waves 3-4m high devastated 150 households in Vĩnh Tân Commune, with some 300m of coastline completely eroded.

Mekong Delta urged to store fresh water for 2017 dry season

Localities in Mekong Delta are now taking initiative in storing water and cooperating with each other in exploiting water sources, getting ready to cope with drought and saline intrusion.

According to the Central Center for Hydrometeorology Forecasting, the 2016-2017 dry season is likely to end later than usual. It said the drought would be less severe than in 2015-2016, while the water level on Mekong River would be low and influenced by tides. HÀ NỘI — A year after the environmental catastrophe of mass fish deaths caused by the Hưng Nghiệp Formosa Steel Corporation, residents along the central coast are trying to return to a normal life.

Formosa’s actions polluted more than 200km of coastline in April last year, killing more than 100 tonnes of fish and devasting the environment, robbing thousands of people of their livelihoods and severely damaging the economies of Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Bình, Quảng Tri and Thừa Thiên Huế provinces.

Fisheries and tourism, key economic sectors for the central region, were plunged into a serious crisis.
