I am an attorney in the Washington DC area, with a Doctor of Law in the US, attended the master program at the National School of Administration of Việt Nam, and graduated from Sài Gòn University Law School. I aso studied philosophy at the School of Letters in Sài Gòn. . I have worked as an anti-trust attorney for Federal Trade Commission and a litigator for a fortune-100 telecom company in Washington DC. I have taught law courses for legal professionals in Việt Nam and still counsel VN government agencies on legal matters. I have founded and managed businesses for me and my family, both law and non-law. I have published many articles on national newspapers and radio stations in Việt Nam. In 1989 I was one of the founding members of US-VN Trade Council, working to re-establish US-VN relationship. Since the early 90's, I have established and managed VNFORUM and VNBIZ forum on VN-related matters; these forums are the subject of a PhD thesis by Dr. Caroline Valverde at UC-Berkeley and her book Transnationalizing Viet Nam. I translate poetry and my translation of "A Request at Đồng Lộc Cemetery" is now engraved on a stone memorial at Đồng Lộc National Shrine in VN. I study and teach the Bible and Buddhism. In 2009 I founded and still manage dotchuoinon.com on positive thinking and two other blogs on Buddhism. In 2015 a group of friends and I founded website CVD - Conversations on Vietnam Development (cvdvn.net). I study the art of leadership with many friends who are religious, business and government leaders from many countries. HCM CITY (VNS) — The modernisation of Viet Nam’s railway system is projected to cost about US$5.1 billion, experts said during an event on detailed plans to upgrade the 1,726 km stretch of the North-South railway from Ha Noi to HCM City.

The plan, introduced to the public on Friday by the Viet Nam Railway Authority (VNRA), outlined major projects to be carried out until 2030. The plan aims to eliminate bottlenecks, such as the tunnels of Khe Net and Hai Van, and move the Da Nang Train Station out of the city, as well as more than 90 other infrastructure upgrades to the railway system. At a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, visiting Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh has asked Vice President of the European Commission (EC) Valdis Dombrovskis to help accelerate the signing of the EU- Vietnam free trade agreement (EVFTA).

As maritime nations, Vietnam and Japan need to enhance cooperation to maintain peace and stability at sea, Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives Tadamori Oshima told Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Tokyo on Thursday.

The leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam arrived in Japan on Tuesday for a four-day visit, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The family of the Vietnamese fisherman who was shot dead by the Thai coast guard force ten days ago can sue the attackers to demand compensation, a local lawyer has said.

Lawyer Ha Hai, from the Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association, offered the suggestion while referring to a Thai police boat – the ship Thai Police 528 – opening fire on six Vietnamese fishing ships while they were operating in the waters off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on September 11.

The rights of migrant workers are routinely violated and even more so when their immigration status is irregular, said UN Human Rights Chief, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

“Not only are they often denied even the most basic labour protections, personal security, due process guarantees, healthcare and, in the case of their children, education; they may also face abuses at international borders, including prolonged detention or ill-treatment. And in some cases they risk being trafficked, enslaved, sexually assaulted or murdered,” he described.

Zeid was speaking at a panel discussion which marked the 25th anniversary of the convention on migrant workers that not only analysed migration trends, but also sought the views of countries of destination of migration on their response to challenges in protecting migrants’ rights. Specialists in infectious disease are protesting a gigantic overnight increase in the price of a 62-year-old drug that is the standard of care for treating a life-threatening parasitic infection.

The drug, called Daraprim, was acquired in August by Turing Pharmaceuticals, a start-up run by a former hedge fund manager. Turing immediately raised the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50, bringing the annual cost of treatment for some patients to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Dozens of Burmese men in the bustling port town of Ambon were the latest to go home, some more than a decade after being trafficked onto Thai trawlers.
