Many locals have been exploiting natural and cultural advantages to develop their business.

With agility and intelligence, 33-year-old Sung A Ho, a resident of Ngai Cho Village, was one of the first to offer a homestay service in the commune.

The first impression that people have of Ho is that of a friendly and frank man. Born into a poor family with eight children, he did not have the resources to go to school. He cannot read or write, but that has not stopped him from earning a stable living.

“My family used to be very poor,” he said. “We had to work on terraced rice and maize fields throughout the year. Sometimes when we did not have a good harvest, we had to eat cassava instead of rice or maize.” Tiếp tục đọc “Mong man turns home into business”

A bright morning and the sun sends fragile rays through layers of leaves in Cuc Phuong National Park in the northern province of Ninh Binh.

The twittering of birds and chattering monkeys is a natural alarm for staff at the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre (EPRC).

Two attendants slowly walk on the path between the trees and cages of primates that need special cares. They talk about the monkeys they put geographical positioning rings on yesterday. They will release them back into the wild in few days.

For the past 20 years, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien and Tilo Nadler have enjoyed the start of each day walking round the centre. Tiếp tục đọc “Amazing family saves primates”

To Realize Duterte’s ‘Golden Age of Infrastructure’ in Philippines, Better Roads a Must

In Asia, January 31, 2018 By King Francis Ocampo

For anyone who has spent time in the Philippines, you can probably relate to the frustration over the country’s poor road and transportation infrastructure. Whether in metro Manila, where an average commuter spends more than an hour stuck in traffic jams or about three hours commuting to and from work, or in the countryside, where paved roads end abruptly leaving a bumpy, grueling drive ahead, the infrastructure problem is omnipresent.

In the World Economic Forum’s latest Global Competitiveness Index, the Philippines ranked 56th out of 137 countries. Despite moving up a notch from the previous year, the country still fell behind six of its ASEAN neighbors. One of the biggest impediments is a lack of investment in infrastructure: the index puts the Philippines 90th in terms of infrastructure ranking and warns that this is significantly undermining the country’s ability to compete globally. India’s New Philanthropy

IN ASIA

In Conversation: India’s New Philanthropy

January 31, 2018 By Editor

India has around 2 percent of the world’s millionaires and 5 percent of its billionaires, and since 2000, wealth in the country has grown 9.2 percent a year, faster than the global average of 6 percent. At the same time, India ranks among the highest in terms of income inequality and dominates the world’s poorest 10 percent. India’s leaders are grappling with how to narrow this gap, particularly as foreign funding to the country dwindles. Since 2009, India has added over 100 million donors, large and small, but there’s very little data on the extent of philanthropy.

A new report examines the state of Indian philanthropy, and shines a light on new ideas and innovations, and the implications of these for the future role of philanthropy as an agent of social change. In Asia editor Alma Freeman speaks with Chandrika Sahai, coordinator of Philanthropy for Social Justice and Peace, which co-published the report, on some of the key takeaways. “When we clearly name producers at high risk of polluting the environment, it is easier to force them to fix the situation,” he said. Tiếp tục đọc “Ministry acts first on environment”

Only 2,062 PhD students were enrolled in 2012-2016 for domestic training courses, fulfilling 36 percent of the enrollment plan.

In principle, 703 PhD students were due to finish the research period, but only 165, or 23 percent of PhD students, completed the courses and successfully defended their dissertations. Tiếp tục đọc “Education Ministry’s project to produce 9,000 PhDs: Is it working?”
