Satellite data plus artificial intelligence equals no place to hide.

Tuesday brings a somewhat mind-blowing announcement in the world of power plants and pollution.

In a nutshell: A nonprofit artificial intelligence firm called WattTime is going to use satellite imagery to precisely track the air pollution (including carbon emissions) coming out of every single power plant in the world, in real time. And it’s going to make the data public.

This is a very big deal. Poor monitoring and gaming of emissions data have made it difficult to enforce pollution restrictions on power plants. This system promises to effectively eliminate poor monitoring and gaming of emissions data.

And it won’t just be regulators and politicians who see this data; it will be the public too. When it comes to environmental enforcement, the public can be more terrifying and punitive than any regulator. If any citizen group in the world can go online and pull up a list of the dirtiest power plants in their area, it eliminates one of the great informational barriers to citizen action.

Tại buổi họp báo thường kỳ Chính phủ tháng 4 diễn ra vào tối 4/5, Thứ trưởng Bộ Công Thương Đỗ Thắng Hải đã lý giải việc điều chỉnh giá điện và giá xăng dầu vào danh mục Bí mật Nhà nước của ngành.

Thứ trưởng Bộ Công Thương Đỗ Thắng Hải cho biết, liên quan đến đề xuất sửa giá điện bậc thang, bất cứ quy định nào đưa ra mà không hợp lý thì dù mới đưa ra, nếu cần thiết sửa thì vẫn phải sửa trên cơ sở đảm bảo quyền lợi của người tiêu dùng, đảm bảo chiến lược sử dụng năng lượng hiệu quả, phù hợp thực tiễn của Việt Nam.

“Về dự thảo danh mục Bí mật Nhà nước của ngành, Bộ Công Thương đã đưa ra danh mục có 2 mặt hàng điện và xăng dầu. Tuy nhiên, đây không phải là giá mặt hàng này mà là phương án tính toán để trình các cấp có thẩm quyền trước khi công bố. Hiện nay giá xăng đã theo cơ chế thị trường có sự quản lý của Nhà nước nhưng đây là mặt hàng thiết yếu, tác động trực tiếp đến kinh tế vĩ mô và đời sống nhân dân, dễ gây ra lạm phát kỳ vọng ảnh hưởng đến đời sống. Tương tự như vậy với giá điện. Vì thế, Bộ muốn đưa 2 nhóm hàng này vào danh mục Bí mật Nhà nước trước khi công bố giá chính thức” – Thứ trưởng Đỗ Thắng Hải nói.

Ikea plans to use packaging made with mushrooms as an eco-friendly replacement for polystyrene, the Swedish retail giant has revealed.

The flat-pack furniture retailer is looking at using the biodegradable “fungi packaging” as part of its efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling, Joanna Yarrow, head of sustainability for Ikea in the UK said.

Vietnam’s first carmaker to launch nonprofit electric bus service

Vinfast announced Thursday the establishment of VinBus, which will offer passenger transportation services in major Vietnamese cities.

The company said that the Vinbus Transport Service Co. will operate under a non-profit model, aiming to develop a modern public transportation system that reduces pollution and noise in Vietnam’s major cities.

The company will exclusively produce and run electric buses, it said.

VinBus has a charter capital of VND1 trillion ($42.88 million), and expects to start running bus routes in 5 major cities: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho.

In the short term, the company plans to operate 3,000 electric buses made by VinFast.

At present, the VinFast bus factory is still under construction. German industrial manufacturing giant Siemens has agreed to provide the technology and components to build electric buses here.

China’s top economic planning body has proposed new rules that would see the closure of all local cryptocurrency mining facilities if enacted – a move that would potentially end the country’s dominance in the energy-hungry, yet lucrative industry.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on Monday

unveiled amendments

to its guidance for adjustments to the nation’s industrial structure, including categories that are encouraged, restricted and eliminated. Cryptocurrency mining was included among sectors to be eliminated immediately. The new list is under public consultation until May 7.

The NDRC did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent via a message board on its website.

Cryptocurrency mining is the process of validating transactions in digital forms of money like bitcoin and ethereum in exchange for new coins given as a reward. The specialised computers used for the mining activity consume large amounts of electricity.
