The North Vietnamese Army was a very capable force. The South Koreans in Vietnam, the Marines called them ROKs for Republic of Korea, were known as fierce fighters who also gave no quarter. Many considered their actions war crimes because they could be indiscriminate with their fire power and kill noncombatants.

Just consider this anecdote. After we left, some years later the Vietnamese got into a serious battle with the Chinese. The word I got was they killed 50,000 of them, really put a whipping on them. That’s the people who avoided Koreans? They didn’t avoid Marines so I doubt if they really feared the Koreans, as good as they were. That being said, they did not waste their troops and were rarely in a position where they could be trapped and destroyed in place. They were too good for that.
