Increasingly complicated and tense developments related to the South China Sea are attracting international attention. Meanwhile, some information sources are trying to mislead the public in different countries as to the nature of the issue, its causes and actual developments. The Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation (VPDF) would like to introduce the collection of analysis by experts at the VPDF, with the hope of helping international friends and the people of various countries, including China, to have a better understanding of the issue.

President-elect Joe Biden is likely to mobilize the power of multilateral mechanisms to deal with the South China Sea and other issues involving China, analysts say.
“I expect President-elect Biden will be considerably more hawkish on China than some fear, the entire Democratic Party has shifted in that direction given China’s moves in the South China Sea, Xinjiang, Hong Kong,” Gregory Poling of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a U.S. think tank, told VnExpress International.

Prior to the devastating impacts of COVID-19, Southeast Asia was becoming an economic powerhouse. Manufacturing, industry and services expanded across the region in recent decades. Energy demand also grew an average of 6% per year, one of the fastest growth rates in the world. But despite the global decline in renewable energy prices, Southeast Asian countries have largely embraced fossil fuels to meet their growing energy needs.

He would meet leaders in both countries “to reaffirm the strength of our bilateral relationships,” it tweeted on Thursday.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswomen Le Thi Thu Hang said at a press meet the same day that O’Brien will be in Vietnam from Friday to Sunday for high-level meetings to discuss bilateral relations and regional and international issues that concern both Vietnam and the U.S.

Until now, senior American officials had never spoken publicly with such candor and consistency about the challenge posed by China to our nation. It draws from the Adaptation Finance Accountability Initiative’s experiences in Ethiopia and Uganda as well as lessons learned from similar efforts in Bangladesh, Kenya, and the Philippines. It offers valuable information to help civil society organizations build their engagement and capacity on climate adaptation finance.
The new Dutch policy could foreshadow a joint European policy toward the strategically vital region.

The government of the Netherlands has released a new policy document outlining a new strategy for the Indo-Pacific region, following similar recent moves by its European neighbors France and Germany.
The new policy document, which was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 13, foreshadows a greater focus on Asia, in apparent recognition of China’s growing assertiveness and the European Union’s increasing economic and trade partnerships with the region.
