BẾN TRE – The unusually early saltwater intrusion this year is threatening the farming of flowers and ornamental plants in Bến Tre Province’s Chợ Lách District, the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta’s largest producer of flowers and ornamental plants.

Chợ Lách is growing more than 11 million pots of flowers and ornamental plants for Tết (Lunar New Year), which falls on January 25 next year, according to the district Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development. HO CHI MINH CITY – Vietnam is being hit by a pork shortage, brought on by the scourge of swine fever and the U.S.-Chinese trade war, just before Tet, the Lunar New Year — a holiday in which pork plays a key role — approaches.

The swine fever virus has been spreading through Asia and devastating pig populations in a number of countries.  It is estimated that one-fourth of the global supply of pigs has died this year. Meanwhile, the trade war has made imported U.S. pork more expensive in China, which has turned to Vietnam and other sources, cutting into the supply in Vietnam. Low coffee prices upset farmers in spite of bumper crop

At this time, coffee farmers in Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai and Dak Nong provinces are entering harvest season. However, despite of a bumper crop, farmers are unhappy as the price of coffee is extremely low, causing them to be unable to cover investment and caring costs and the risk of a shortage of capital for next crop.

Vietnam’s agricultural sector at a crossroads

In 2018, Vietnam’s agriculture sector witnessed its highest growth rate in recent years — 3.76 per cent. Export revenue from the sector was US$40 billion, with a trade surplus of US$8.72 billion. Như vậy là chưa đầy một năm kể từ khi Monsanto chuyển sang tay Tập đoàn hóa chất Đức Bayer, đã diễn ra 3 vụ xét xử công ty hóa chất đã từng chiếm thị phần lớn nhất trong chất độc da cam được cung cấp cho Mỹ sử dụng trong chiến tranh ở Việt Nam. Trong 3 vụ xét xử nói trên, có 2 vụ ở Mỹ và 1 vụ ở Pháp.

HCM CITY – Coastal aquaculture is being developed in many localities but the output is very small compared to the country’s potential, experts have said.

The marine aquaculture area and output increased by 20 per cent every year since 2010 to 258,000ha and 431,600 tonnes last year.

Biên phòng – Những năm gần đây, sản phẩm tinh dầu nói chung và tinh dầu sả nói riêng ngày càng được thị trường tiêu thụ ưa chuộng, trong khi ở Tây Nguyên, diện tích trồng cây sả ngày càng tăng cao. Đây chính là nguyên nhân khiến nghề trưng cất tinh dầu sả tại đây đang trở thành nghề “ăn nên làm ra”, mang lại thu nhập kinh tế cao.

Theo thống kê, Việt Nam có tới hơn 12.000 loài thực vật với trên 4.000 loại có khả năng trị bệnh, trong đó có những loài dược liệu quý, hiếm, có khả năng ngăn ngừa, ức chế những căn bệnh như ung thư, đái tháo đường… Sở hữu nguồn dược liệu phong phú, quý hiếm và có dược tính cao, Việt Nam hoàn toàn có đầy đủ điều kiện để trở thành một trong những nước đi đầu trong ngành xuất khẩu dược liệu.
