Hanoi: A Taiwanese steel firm behind a toxic spill that killed tonnes of fish in central Vietnam last year was fined for a second time for illegally burying “harmful” waste, official sources said on Sunday.

The deadly dump from Formosa’s $11 billion (Dh40 billion) steel plant in Ha Tinh province sparked one of the country’s worst environmental catastrophes, decimating livelihoods along swathes of coastline and prompting months of rare protests in the authoritarian country.

The firm was initially fined $500 million for pouring toxic chemicals including cyanide into the ocean in April 2016, and has now been ordered to pay an additional $25,000 on separate charges of burying harmful solid waste in the ground, according to the official Cong Ly newspaper. Recent reports of emissions exceeding the permissible amount at Formosa steel mills in north-central Ha Tinh Province were the result of a raised capacity to evaluate the company’s emission treatment system, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) has said.

A chief of environmental protection operations under Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has been dismissed for his management oversight that had led to the Formosa disaster last year.

Luong Duy Hanh, director of the Department of Control of Environmental Protection Activities, has been removed from his position, a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper said, quoting the decision of the Vietnam Environment Administration.

Results from the Central Inspection Committee showed that Hanh, during his time in office, failed to correctly monitor the activities of the Vietnamese steel subsidiary of Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Group in the north-central province of Ha Tinh. Trước việc cả trăm người dân tụ tập, cản trở giao thông trên quốc lộ 1A, Công an thị xã Kỳ Anh (Hà Tĩnh) đã khởi tố vụ án để điều tra.

Ngày 9/4, đại tá Đặng Hoài Sơn, Trưởng công an thị xã Kỳ Anh (Hà Tĩnh) cho biết, vừa khởi tố vụ án Gây rối trật tự công cộng để điều tra việc người dân tụ tập, gây ùn tắc trên quốc lộ 1A.

Theo tài liệu điều tra, trong hai ngày 2-3/4, lấy lý do chính quyền đền bù sự cố môi trường chưa thỏa đáng, khoảng 150 người dân mang lưới đánh cá, gạch đá kéo ra chặn xe trên quốc lộ 1A đoạn qua đèo Con, khu vực giáp ranh phường Kỳ Phương và Kỳ Nam (thị xã Kỳ Anh). Sự việc khiến phương tiện qua đây bị tắc nghẽn kéo dài.

Sea life began washing up on April 6, 2016 near a steel plant being developed by Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Corp . Vietnam’s environment watchdog is inspecting a steel mill developed by Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Group to decide whether or not it can put a blast furnace into use, one year after the facility’s wastewater caused mass fish deaths the along country’s central coast.

The mass fish deaths, affecting four central provinces, was first recorded on April 6, 2016, but Formosa only admitted its responsibility in June the same year, pledging US$500mn in compensation.

The Taiwanese company has promised to fix all of its violations and make sure its steel mill, located in Ha Tinh Province, follows all environmental standards and requirements set by the Vietnamese authorities. HANOI: Vietnam said on Wednesday (Feb 22) it will punish 11 senior officials for misconduct over a toxic waste dump last year that killed tonnes of fish in one of the country’s worst environmental disasters.

Taiwanese steel firm Formosa was blamed for the crisis that decimated livelihoods in coastal fishing communities in central Vietnam and was forced to pay $500 million in fines.

16 cán bộ, cảnh sát của Nghệ An đã bị thương trong vụ xô xát với hàng trăm giáo dân giáo xứ Song Ngọc ngày 14/2.

Vụ việc được TTXVN đánh giá là “phức tạp” xảy ra tại Giáo xứ Song Ngọc, xã Quỳnh Ngọc (Quỳnh Lưu, Nghệ An). Theo nguồn tin này, ngày 10/2, Linh mục Nguyễn Đình Thục, quản xứ Song Ngọc, soạn “thư ngỏ” kêu gọi các linh mục và cộng đoàn các Giáo xứ Hiệp Thông, cầu nguyện cho giáo dân Giáo xứ Song Ngọc đi gửi đơn khởi kiện Công ty TNHH Hưng Nghiệp Formosa tại Tòa án Nhân dân Thị xã Kỳ Anh (tỉnh Hà Tĩnh) vào ngày 14/2/2017.

Sáng sớm ngày 14/2 khoảng 500 giáo dân tập trung tại Giáo xứ Song Ngọc để đi vào tỉnh Hà Tĩnh. Khi đến xã Diễn Hồng (Diễn Châu, Nghệ An), cảnh sát giao thông đã tổ chức phân làn phương tiện tham gia giao thông khác đi vào một làn đường và đoàn giáo dân đi vào một làn đường để tránh ách tắc.
