The Vietnamese government has approved the construction of multiple expressways and various other traffic infrastructure projects in the Mekong Delta in a bid to boost local development.

The government has announced plans to build an expressway connecting Vietnam’s two northern provinces of Hoa Binh and Son La, at an estimated cost of VND50.27 trillion (US$2.2 billion).
The new road, which will extend the Hanoi-Hoa Binh Expressway, is expected to boost the socio-economic development in Son La province and other provinces in the north western region.

The villagers in Yen Bai Province are risking their lives to cross the stream every day as the local bridges have been abandoned unfinished for years.
In order to go to Phong Du Thuong Commune’s centre, the local people have to use a raft to cross a large stream even when it rains or there are storms.
Temporary bridges built by the locals themselves in the commune were destroyed in a flash flood in August so the pupils had to stay home because of high tides. Various places in the commune become islands when there are heavy rains.
Lo Van Manh, chairman of Phong Du Thuong Commune People’s Committee, said, “I’m used to this bumpy road and know every pothole. But I really feel for the children, they walk in the mud to go to school and they are dirty all over.”

Most build, operate and transfer projects in the transport sector have appointed contractors and not gone through tendering.
Build, operate and transfer (BOT) projects have made headlines due to continual problems. Cai Lay BOT project has faced strong opposition from drivers due to its high fees. To oppose the fees, drivers used small notes, costing more time for the station officers for the fee collection.

According to drivers, the fees of VND35,000-180,000 (USD1.50-8.18) to travel on a 12-km road with just two lanes was too high. Một tuyến đường chỉ dài hơn 300 cây số, vắt ngang xứ Đông Dương chạy từ Đông Hà (thủ phủ tỉnh Quảng Trị) lên đến bờ đông sông Mekong (tỉnh Savannakhet, Lào) giáp biên giới Thái – Lào, nhưng lịch sử của cuộc kháng chiến vệ quốc hôm qua hay công cuộc mở cửa hội nhập hôm nay đều gắn bó mật thiết với nó.
