HONG KONG/PHNOM PENH Just a few blocks from the Royal Palace, in the traditional heart of downtown Phnom Penh, sits one of Cambodia’s most renowned Chinese schools. Over the past century, the Tuan Hoa School has witnessed the many ups and downs of the capital. Today, it has front-row seats to an unprecedented boom.

BUDAPEST: Chinese Premier Li Keqiang made clear Monday (Nov 27) that China would keep pouring billions of euros into central and eastern Europe despite EU concerns, as he attended a regional summit in Hungary.

While China did not recognize the jurisdiction
of the Annex VII arbitral panel under the
authority of the LOS Convention,
it is apparently recasting its claims based on land
territory rather than on an area enclosed by the
“9-Dash Line” that was rejected by the Arbitral Panel.

Why this is important: China’s new approach
to its jurisdiction in the South China Sea may
be presented as a concession by people who
do not understand that substantive claims
appear to have changed little from those
made under the infamous “9-Dash Line,”
so it is important that we all understand
the details of the new “Four Shas” policy.

In August of this year, China presented a new take on its claims to the South China Sea. It isn’t clear whether the infamous “9-Dash Line” has been relegated to history or the new scheme is some form of supplement. The red line in the map below is based on the dashes of China’s 9-Dash Line.

When China halted plans for more than 100 new coal-fired power plants this year, even as President Trump vowed to “bring back coal” in America, the contrast seemed to confirm Beijing’s new role as a leader in the fight against climate change.

But new data on the world’s biggest developers of coal-fired power plants paints a very different picture: China’s energy companies will make up nearly half of the new coal generation expected to go online in the next decade.

China has offered to help Bangladesh and Myanmar resolve the Rohingya crisis, a move Chinese analysts said reflected Beijing’s more proactive and conciliatory tack on regional affairs.

Arriving in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw on Sunday after a stop in Bangladesh, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also said the international community must help fight poverty and promote development in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

To my surprise, a group of Chinese men — young, but older than I was — flocked to me, asking me repeatedly if I had any boyfriends, if my dating life resembled the popular American sitcom Friends, and if I was “open,” which I later learned was a poor translation for a Chinese phrase that meant “sexually liberal.” I was not.
