HONG KONG/PHNOM PENH Just a few blocks from the Royal Palace, in the traditional heart of downtown Phnom Penh, sits one of Cambodia’s most renowned Chinese schools. Over the past century, the Tuan Hoa School has witnessed the many ups and downs of the capital. Today, it has front-row seats to an unprecedented boom.

Run by a local ethnic Chinese organization, the school is one of the largest Mandarin-speaking elementary and junior high schools outside China and Taiwan. It currently has more than 11,000 students, including those at its branch campus. Tiếp tục đọc “The ‘Chinazation’ of Cambodia”

China’s Revision of its SCS Claims: Does it Matter?

Ocean News, Nov. 27, 2017

While China did not recognize the jurisdiction
of the Annex VII arbitral panel under the
authority of the LOS Convention,
it is apparently recasting its claims based on land
territory rather than on an area enclosed by the
“9-Dash Line” that was rejected by the Arbitral Panel.

Why this is important: China’s new approach
to its jurisdiction in the South China Sea may
be presented as a concession by people who
do not understand that substantive claims
appear to have changed little from those
made under the infamous
 “9-Dash Line,”
so it is important that we all understand

the details of the new “Four Shas” policy.

In August of this year, China presented a new take on its claims to the South China Sea. It isn’t clear whether the infamous “9-Dash Line” has been relegated to history or the new scheme is some form of supplement. The red line in the map below is based on the dashes of China’s 9-Dash Line.

The new proposal recognized the legal principle that”the land dominates the sea,” which means that jurisdiction at sea is based on the geography of the land, something that the 9-Dash line did not address. Tiếp tục đọc “China’s Revision of its SCS Claims: Does it Matter?”

Trong khi Bắc Kinh phát triển Năng lượng tái tạo, thì các công ty Trung Quốc xây nhiệt điện than ở Việt Nam và các nước nghèo – As Beijing Joins Climate Fight, Chinese Companies Build Coal Plants

When China halted plans for more than 100 new coal-fired power plants this year, even as President Trump vowed to “bring back coal” in America, the contrast seemed to confirm Beijing’s new role as a leader in the fight against climate change.

But new data on the world’s biggest developers of coal-fired power plants paints a very different picture: China’s energy companies will make up nearly half of the new coal generation expected to go online in the next decade.

China Refuses to Admit It Has a Rape Problem. I Would Know.

The Communist Party wants to blame Hollywood and “loose women,” instead of acknowledging its own epidemic levels of sexual assault.

In the fall of 2004, when I was 19, I studied abroad in the beautiful coastal Chinese city of Xiamen. One Friday evening, I attended an English meetup at a local university, hoping to make some Chinese friends. To my surprise, a group of Chinese men — young, but older than I was — flocked to me, asking me repeatedly if I had any boyfriends, if my dating life resembled the popular American sitcom Friends, and if I was “open,” which I later learned was a poor translation for a Chinese phrase that meant “sexually liberal.” I was not.

New revelations about the Chinese government’s attempt to forcibly repatriate a Chinese fugitive show an assertive Beijing benefitting from a U.S. administration at odds with itself. But who is that American casino mogul who has apparently become the Chinese government’s backchannel to the White House? It turns out he’s a businessman beholden to Beijing and willing to press their case in the corridors of power in Washington — and he has just the ticket.
