Vietnam’s growth prospects have been revised upwards to 6.7 per cent in both 2017 and 2018 compared to previous forecasts of 6.3 per cent and 6.5 per cent, respectively, in a supplement to the Asia Development Bank’s Asian Development Outlook Update 2017 report, released on December 13.

Vietnam has been ranked sixth among the world’s most attractive retail markets and named in the top 30 most lucrative retail markets this year, said Hoang Anh Tuan, deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT)’s Domestic Market Department.

Tuan made the remarks at the Vietnam Retail Forum 2017 which was held by the Association of Vietnam Retailers (AVR) in Hanoi on December 12.

Tuan said that according to the Global Retail Development Index (GRDI), released by the US-based A.T. Kearney in June this year, Vietnam’s retail market has increased significantly in recent years and attracted a large number of foreign merchants. Vietnam has more than 1,600 ships, but a mere 3.3% of them are container ships, according to a report of the Vietnam Maritime Administration at a meeting on raising the market share of sea transport on December 11.

A ceremony was held at Noi Bai International Airport in the capital city of Hanoi on December 13 to repatriate remains of US servicemen who died during the war in Vietnam.

Built in 1832 in Xich Dang village, Hung Yen province, Xich Dang Temple of Literature hosted examinations and ceremonies to honor outstanding Confucians during feudal times.

It is one of 6 temples of literature that still exist today and the second oldest after the Temple of Literature in Hanoi. Thu Hoa has a story about this national cultural and historical relic.

Visiting Xich Dang Temple of Literature on a sunny day, Dao Thanh Thuy, who has lived in Germany for nearly 20 years, recalls her childhood memory: “We were born in Hanoi. My grandparents lived in Xich Dang village. When we visited them, we often climbed trees and over the gate of the temple and played around the bells. Previously, local people weaved mattresses here. China’s top paper warns party officials against ‘spiritual anesthesia’

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s top newspaper warned Communist Party officials on Thursday not to “pray to God and worship Buddha”, because communism is about atheism and superstition is at the root of many corrupt officials who fall from grace.

China officially guarantees freedom of religion for major belief systems like Christianity, Buddhism and Islam, but party members are meant to be atheists and are especially banned from participating in what China calls superstitious practices like visiting soothsayers.

The party’s official People’s Daily said in a commentary it had not been uncommon over the past few years to see officials taken down for corruption to have also participated in “feudalistic superstitious activities”.

“In fact, some officials often go to monasteries, pray to God and worship Buddha,” it said. “Some officials are obsessed with rubbing shoulders with masters, fraternizing with them as brothers and becoming their lackeys and their money-trees.”

A global effort to bolster the number of women on corporate boards is taking longer than it should. But the recent performance of companies that lead their peers on this measure may accelerate change.

An MSCI study published this month shows just seven companies in its key global index, comprised of more than 2,500 members, have boards that are dominated by women. But of these seven, more than half have outperformed their industry peers. The list is led by luxury retailer Kering FP, which has seven women on its 11-person board. The Gucci owner has outperformed the entire index as well as the more-specific consumer discretionary index not only on a year-to-date measure, but also since the company added two more female directors in April 2016 to put women in the majority.

A recent test by research institute the Pasteur Institute on poultry and pork samples taken from local markets revealed that 100 percent of the meat was contaminated with E. coli because of unhygienic conditions at marketplaces and slaughterhouses.

Sixty-four percent of seafood samples also tested positive for the bacteria.
