The Omar Ibn Said Collection consists of 42 digitized documents in both English and Arabic, including an 1831 manuscript in Arabic on “The Life of Omar Ibn Said,” a West African slave in America, which is the centerpiece of this unique collection of texts. Some of the manuscripts in this collection include texts in Arabic by another West African slave in Panama, and others from individuals located in West Africa.

A satirical look at the dubious characters and state officials who buy nationality as if it’s a luxury car. Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit obtained a leak of documents that we’re calling The Cyprus Papers.
If you can afford $2.5 million to purchase a passport to Europe, then you’re probably already on someone’s rich list with at least a Porsche in the garage. The leak reveals 2,500 people who paid to become new citizens of Cyprus with the added perk of be able to live and work anywhere from Milan to Monte Carlo.
So who’s on the list? Among the names in The Cyprus Papers are convicted criminals, men on the run and political figures regarded as a high-risk for dirty money.

(CNN)A new group led by a prominent conservative lawyer has received $1.6 billion from one donor — the largest single contribution to a politically focused nonprofit that’s ever been made public, and a fortune that could be used to fuel right-wing interests.
The nonprofit, Marble Freedom Trust, received the contribution in the form of stock and then funneled more than $200 million to other conservative organizations last year, a tax form CNN obtained from the IRS shows.
Marble Freedom is led by Leonard Leo, the co-chairman of the conservative Federalist Society, who advised former President Donald Trump on his Supreme Court picks and runs a sprawling network of other right-wing nonprofits that don’t disclose their donors, which are often referred to as dark money groups.
Moscow fuels Myanmar war machine, then claims to bring peace

On August 3, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made an official visit to Myanmar, underscoring Russia’s support for the country’s military government.
The visit came just over a week after Myanmar’s military junta announced it had executed four pro-democracy activists – the country’s first executions in decades – sparking international condemnation.
Myanmar has spiraled into chaos since February 2021, when the military seized power by force from the elected government.
As of August 5, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, run by Myanmar citizens in exile, said 2,158 “people, pro-democracy activists and other civilians” have been killed as a result of the post-coup military crackdown.
Lavrov said Russia stood in solidarity with “efforts to stabilize the situation in the country” and welcomed planned elections next year. Analysts say the elections will be used to install a pro-military government.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova weighed in on what she described as Lavrov’s “rich visit.” In reference to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan, Zakharova said Lavrov visited “to promote cooperation,” rather than provoke China.
“Russia brings cooperation, peace, [and] stability to the region. Russia operates based on international law, mutual respect and the mutual consideration of interests,” Russian state broadcaster Sputnik quoted Zakharova as saying.
That is false. Russia, as a major supplier of arms to Myanmar’s military government, is doing anything but bringing peace and stability to the region.

Every morning a new headline underscores growing economic concerns: Highest inflation since the 1970s. Central banks aggressively raising rates. Consumer sentiment at record lows. Commodity prices near all-time highs. Clearly inflation has, at a minimum, altered the economic mood, and potentially reset the path of global and national economies worldwide for years to come. McKinsey’s experts have examined many of the strategic implications of inflation. Here, we use the best and most recent publicly available data to offer seven charts illustrating inflation’s insidious progress

Double trouble. In the past six months, inflation has far exceeded December 2021 expectations. In many countries, actual rates have doubled projections. European countries are particularly affected. For example, inflation in Lithuania is running at 15.5 percent annually, nearly five times the rate expected. Poland is at 11 percent and the United Kingdom at 9 percent, both well above projections. At 3 percent, Switzerland is an outlier. Asia is seeing a less severe change: Indian inflation is about 7 percent, only a bit above projections; and South Korea is at 5 percent. In China and Japan, inflation remains muted.

Rồi trường đại học vùng đó thay vì đào tạo một bác sĩ lại ồ ạt tuyển sinh đào tạo chừng chục bác sĩ mỗi năm. Rất dễ hình dung trước đây trường thoải mái chọn em học sinh tốt nghiệp 30 điểm vào để đào tạo, nay hạ điểm chuẩn còn 10 điểm cũng không tìm đủ người chịu vào học.
Ai bỏ công học suốt chừng ấy năm nếu biết chắc ra trường họ sẽ không thể hành nghề bác sĩ vì thị trấn không có nhu cầu?
TTCT – Việt Nam đã bắt đầu thí điểm cổ phần hóa doanh nghiệp nhà nước (DNNN) từ năm 1990, năm 1992 chính thức được thực hiện, năm 2010 có kế hoạch cổ phần hóa dự kiến hoàn thành vào năm 2020. Cho đến nay đã trải qua 31 năm nhưng quá trình cổ phần hóa vẫn chưa kết thúc và chưa hề có luật về cổ phần hóa. Nhiều đại biểu Quốc hội khóa XV trong đợt 1 kỳ họp thứ hai vừa kết thúc ngày 30-10-2021 cũng đã nhấn mạnh yêu cầu cổ phần hóa DNNN trong kế hoạch tái cơ cấu kinh tế đến năm 2025.
Quá trình cổ phần hóa phức tạp liên quan đến đất đai, sở hữu trí tuệ, biến động thị trường…, nhưng đến nay chỉ được điều chỉnh bằng các nghị định của Chính phủ.
Vai trò giám sát của Quốc hội và các cơ quan dân cử chưa được chế định và chưa phát huy đầy đủ, các tổ chức xã hội chưa được tham gia đóng góp ý kiến hay hỗ trợ, giám sát.
Lỗ hổng pháp luật này đã dẫn đến những vụ như cổ phần hóa khách sạn Phú Gia bên cạnh hồ Hoàn Kiếm hay Bánh tôm hồ Tây với giá rất thấp mà cho đến nay vẫn không biết cổ đông là ai, hay chuyển nhượng tài sản của Sabeco ở TP.HCM và AVG ở Bộ Thông tin và truyền thông gây thất thoát hàng ngàn tỉ đồng, khiến nhiều cán bộ cao cấp phải vào tù – những thiệt hại quá lớn cần được rút kinh nghiệm nghiêm túc.

Một nghịch lý là trong khi quá trình chuyển đổi sang cơ chế thị trường sau đổi mới, các biện pháp gian nan như bỏ trợ cấp giá, điều chỉnh tỉ giá, chấp nhận kinh tế tư nhân… đều được thực hiện quyết đoán, không có tư vấn quốc tế, thì quá trình cải cách, tái cơ cấu, cổ phần hóa DNNN lại diễn ra chậm, rất khó khăn, dù phải thực hiện để đáp ứng yêu cầu của các tổ chức quốc tế cho Việt Nam vay vốn hay hiệp định thương mại tự do mà Việt Nam tham gia.
Giữa lúc dịch bệnh căng thẳng, ngày càng có nhiều tiếng nói kêu gọi chú trọng phát triển y tế cơ sở. Nhưng y tế cơ sở là y tế nào, huyện hay xã?
Tôi đặt câu hỏi như vậy vì y tế Việt Nam phân thành ba cấp kỹ thuật: tuyến trung ương, tuyến tỉnh và tuyến y tế cơ sở. Tuy nhiên trong ngôn ngữ hàng ngày cũng như trong tư duy làm việc thì một cách không chính thức, hệ thống y tế được phân theo bốn cấp tương ứng với đơn vị hành chính: tuyến trung ương, tuyến tỉnh, tuyến huyện và tuyến xã. Vậy vai trò của y tế huyện nằm ở đâu?

But under President Trump, all opportunities were lost. And now, under President Biden, relations remain tense.
