The 1960s in the Arab World (3 episodes)

Al Jazeera English – 3 thg 8, 2022

The 1960s was a decade of change that hugely impacted the Arab world.

This first of three episodes follows the politics of the time: The rise of Arab nationalism, the newfound independence of former French colonies, and the defeat of Arab armies in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.

The stories of the shifting sands of the 60s are told by many who were there, including former government ministers, broadcasters, activists and writers.

They recall a decade whose end was profoundly different from the beginning, where loyalties shifted and old certainties were challenged. Later episodes chart the culture and society of this transformative decade.

It’s a Man’s World: Rape in Cambodia | REWIND

Al Jazeera English – 12 thg 12, 2016

We rewind to 2013 when 101 East travelled to Cambodia to talk with men who admit rape and violence against women. Have attitudes changed since then?

Gang rape hit the headlines in a big way after the brutal attack of a woman on a bus in India’s capital, Delhi in 2012. But research showed that gang rape was a problem not just in India but across Asia.

The normalisation of violence against women… is still a common pattern around the world. Tiếp tục đọc “It’s a Man’s World: Rape in Cambodia” →

The Chinese entrepreneurs chasing an Afghan ‘gold rush’

Al Jazeera English – 24 thg 11, 2022

When the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, most foreigners and multinational companies had already packed up and left Afghanistan.

Going against the stream of foreigners fleeing the country was a group looking for “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities: Chinese entrepreneurs.

Despite the ongoing unrest, an economic crisis and United Nations’ concerns over human rights, more Chinese citizens are joining the country’s “gold rush”. Once a small minority, Chinese nationals now make up Afghanistan’s biggest group of expatriates.

With exclusive access to leading Chinese investors, 101 East investigates their growing influence across Afghanistan’s business and media sectors.

An Unholy Alliance: Monks and the Military in Myanmar

Al Jazeera English – 19-3-2019

With almost 90 percent of Myanmar’s population being devoted Buddhists, the religion has been at the heart of the nation’s very identity for centuries.

But while the pillars of Buddhist teachings are love, compassion and peace, there is a very different variation to the philosophy being taught at the Ma Ba Tha monastery in Yangon’s Insein township.

The monks there are connected to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, the systematic persecution and genocide of the Rohingya in Rakhine state.

Al Jazeera’s unprecedented access to the Ma Ba Tha monastery and its leaders offers a glimpse into how their ultra-nationalist agenda is becoming the blueprint for the political structure of the country. Is the joining of forces between monks and generals threatening Myanmar’s young and fragile democracy?

Putin and Xi are as close as ever, and that’s a problem for the US

CNN Simone McCarthy, CNN ----------
When Antony Blinken makes an expected trip to Beijing in the coming days for what would be the first visit to China by a US secretary of state since 2018, he will be cutting a stark contrast to the scene in the Chinese capital one year earlier.  Then, Chinese leader Xi Jinping welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the opening of the Beijing Olympics – meeting for talks and dinner in Putin’s honor, and declaring a “no limits” partnership between the two neighbors. Weeks later, as Russian tanks rolled across the border into Ukraine starting an invasion that would devastate the country and cause a humanitarian crisis, Chinese leaders did not shrink from that declaration.  Though Beijing claimed impartiality in the conflict and no advance knowledge of Russia’s intent, it also refused to condemn Moscow. Instead, it parroted Kremlin lines blaming NATO for provoking the conflict – further fracturing relationships with both Europe and the US.  Tiếp tục đọc “Putin and Xi are as close as ever, and that’s a problem for the US “ →

Lebanon’s forgotten Palestinians

Al Jazeera – 4-1-2023

Generations of Palestinians have called Lebanon home. Many fled here during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

It has been a struggle for them to survive. But the current level of poverty is unprecedented – the result of one of the worst economic crises in recent history.

The United Nations agency that is supposed to support them has been crippled by a shortage of funds. Children are hungry, and many people are jobless, while others die at sea trying to reach Europe.
