Lying on the banks of Red River, Kim Lan pottery village in Gia Lam district, Hanoi has a more than 1,000 year-history of making of ceramics.

The craft reached its peak around the 13th and 14th centuries, making the village a pottery production centre for the capital city of Thang Long (now Hanoi). During that time, most of the country’s ceramic products exported to Japan were made in the village. Tiếp tục đọc “Visiting riverside Kim Lan pottery village”

The decision to liberalize the movie industry in 1995 opened up a new phase for cinemas in Vietnam. After decades of being controlled by state-owned enterprises, foreign cinema firms entered the market, especially those from South Korea, changing the face of the market.

The 2016 report of CJ CGV, which owns the CGV cinema chain, showed satisfactory business results in the last few years, since it took over Megastar and has developed into the biggest cinema chain in the country. Tiếp tục đọc “Foreign players dominate Vietnam’s cinema market”

Có thể nói, từ sau tháng 4-75, chưa lúc nào dòng nhạc Boléro được hát nhiều, trình diễn nhiều như hiện tại. Trinh Con Son wrote, “The Great Circle of Vietnam,” which envisions people holding hands in a circle large enough to encompass his nation.

Over the weekend, news filtered out that Vietnam had lifted a days-old ban on a beloved song by Trinh Con Son, who irritated the South and infuriated the North during years of fighting.

On April 11, Vietnam’s ruling Communist government decreed that “Noi vong tay lon” (“The Great Circle of Vietnam”) could no longer be broadcast or played in public.

The decision came in response to a request from Trinh’s family, who wanted to mount a tribute on April 21 at the Huế College of Medicine and Pharmacy. Tiếp tục đọc “In Rare Reversal, Vietnam Lifts Days-old Ban on Beloved Songwriter’s Work”

Best 23 cities for street food — from Mumbai and Miami to Marrakech

Full article and beautiful pictures for every city on CNN
Ho Chi Minh city ranks 18

Story highlights

  • Some of the world’s best meals can be found on the streets
  • In some cities, food served from carts or holes in the wall is revered
  • Bangkok, Tokyo, Istanbul and Durban are among top street food destinations

(CNN)Sidewalk vendors, push carts, holes in a wall — even in cities with rich reputations for fine dining, some of the best meals are on the streets.

Places like Hong Kong have blurred the line between haute cuisine and quick comfort food, as humble dim sum diners win Michelin stars.
That’s still the exception, but most chefs on the street aren’t looking for that kind of recognition. They’re cooking for crowds who pack around their stands day after day.
Here are the 23 best cities in the world for street food, from quick snacks to moveable feasts:

Authorities in Bangkok have banned street food from the capital’s major roads, causing an outcry in a city famous for its affordable roadside cuisine.

In a move criticised by locals and culinary enthusiasts, thousands of vendors selling dishes such as spicy prawn soup and papaya salad will disappear by the end of the year in the interests of “order and hygiene”, according to city hall. Young entrepreneurs have come up with a creative way to have visitors to Hoi An City take part of its famous nipa palm forest home as souvenirs, Hoai Nam reports

Trương Tấn Thọ, 39, earns a living making traditional paper.

Apart from the famous (poonah) paper, his firm in Hoi An City, called Giấy Việt (Vietnamese paper), also makes paper from the pulp of bamboo and mulberry trees.

A few years ago, Thọ hit up on the idea of using the stems of the nipa palm (called water coconut in Viet Nam), found in profusion in the area, to make paper and paper products, using the know-how he had acquired in making traditional paper with local materials. Peaceful Hoi An featured in oil paintings

TUOI TRE NEWS

Updated : 04/06/2017 13:01 GMT + 7

A young painter born in the central province of Quang Nam has to look no further than the provincial tourist city of Hoi An to find inspiration for his works.

Nguyen Huu Duc, born in 1991, proudly said a collection of oil paintings depicting a pure, simple and peaceful Hoi An Ancient Town is the “treasure of my painting career” over the last two years.

Duc has captured all what makes Hoi An known around the world – the town’s ancient houses with red tile roofs, yellow walls and the bougainvilleas. The young painter also finds inspiration in a pair of hens, an aging oil lamp, an old bicycle or a ceramic tea set.

Duc graduated from the Hue University of Fine Arts and currently works as a freelance painter.

Below are some of his peaceful Hoi An oil paintings. Tiếp tục đọc “Peaceful Hoi An featured in oil paintings”
